What is the difference in a script for potassium and the over the counter potassium. The script for potassium says take with food.why.. I have been taking over the counter potassium for years with no problem

Prescription potassium is much more potent that the supplements that you can purchase over the counter and, in high doses, it can be very harsh on the stomach, which is why it must be taken with food, as reported by the FDA.
Potassium is something that must be very delicately balanced in our bodies, because too much can be just as dangerous as not having enough of it. Thus, the higher doses require a prescription, to help prevent people from being able to overdose, but when someone has a major deficiency in it, it must be available for a doctor to prescribe, in order to help bring it up to normal levels, as fast as possible.
