As long as it has been prescribed for you, there shouldn't be a problem. It is often used prophylactically to prevent infections in those with artificial heart valves.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
