The medication is actually called Periactin and it contains the active ingredient Cyproheptadine, which is an antihistamine. It is actually not used for weight gain, though that can be a side effect of this medication.

Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include dizziness, drowsiness and dry mouth.
