Pain Relief Ms Contin Morphine Methadone (Top voted first)
UpdatedI really need some advice here. I am a cancer patient with a rare tumor. I have taken OxyContin 60MG and OxyCodone 5MG for breakthrough for over 10 years. My DR and I agree it is time to try other medications as I need more pain relief. I do not yet know how many MG he will prescribe for any of these medications. I realize that it would be easier to help answer my questions but any input in general I appreciate. He has given me 3 different meds to choose from: Ms Contin , Morphine & Methadone. Hoping to get others opinions on these. Whether it's regarding pain relief, side effects, etc. Whether it's just about the medication or about in comparison to my current pain meds. I think he will keep me on the 5mg Oxycodone for breakthroughs ( although not positive. ) ANY and ALL thoughts are welcome. Thank you!

Hello Liz! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about your diagnosis and pain.
MS Contin and Morphine are actually the same thing, MS Contin is trade name for a time released formulation of Morphine. It's weaker than Oxycodone, so for each 60mg of Oxycontin that you take, you'd need 90mgs of Morphine to be therapeutically equivalent.
I took it years ago, when I was on pain management and it worked well for me, so it might be worth you trying it.
I'd reserve Methadone for a last resort, type of thing, to try later, when you've exhausted your other options, because it's very habit forming and tends to cause severe cravings and withdrawals, if you ever have to stop it.
The FDA lists these medications as being narcotic analgesics. They carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Hi Liz, I agree with Verwon. I've been on Morphine 60MG now for about 2 years and it has really did good until lately. I would save the Methadone as a last resort. I'm getting ready to start on Methadone 10MG on Wednesday morning. I like to start on a low dose as I'm getting ready to hit the big 60. I'm also on Hydrocodone 10/325 for my in between go to pain reliever. I'm so sorry that you're going through all of this pain, but I'm glad that you have a Dr. that is willing to help you. That really means a lot to the millions of people that are in pain. Good Luck with your decision.
