Oxycontin Will The Medicine Still Work If You Threw Up

My son had knee surgery. He has been struggling with nausea. He was able to eat some crackers and sip water. Concerned that his pain block was wearing off he took 10mg of the prescribed OxyContin. He threw up 29 minutes later. I am concerned that this wasn't enough time for it to get in his system. I left a message for his doctor, but he hasn't returned the phone call- after hours on a Friday.

Oxycontin is a time released formulation, so the medication is slowly released over a period of 12 hours. Thus, if he vomited up the pill, he would no longer be getting any of the medication.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

His doctor may be able to prescribe something to help prevent the nausea, in the future.

Is there anything else I can help with?
