How do you figure a morphine equilvalant. What is the max a pain management MD can prescribe with the new laws?

The overall directives as to prescribe no more than the equivalent of 120mgs of Morphine per day, though some states have lowered it even further to no more than 100mgs.

As to the conversion, Morphine is one a half times weaker than Oxycodone. Thus, the equivalency would be 80mgs of Oxycodone per day to equal the maximum of 120mgs of Morphine.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

However, these limits do not apply, if someone has intractable pain from a possibly fatal condition, such as stage 4 cancer.
