IM ONLY 28 WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND DIDNT WALK FOR OVER A YEAR..I HAD A L3,L4,L5,S1,S2 SPINE FUSION PLUS OVER 30 BREAKS BETWEEN BACK AND PELVIC. ITS BEEN 11 YEARS SINCE AND NOW 3 SCREWS ARE BROKEN, I HAVE 2 BULGING DISCS, 1 HERNIATED DISC, AND A COMPRESSION FRACTURE AND DOCTORS ARE SCARED TO REOPERATE. I TAKE OC OP 80 TO SLEEP AT NIGHT AND 180 -- 20 MG OXYCODONE IR 4-6 TIMES DURING THE DAY. I USED TO ONLY GET 1-2HRS OF SLEEP NOW I FEEL LIKE I CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT AND MAKES ME FEEL BETTER DURING THE DAY. SO YOU JUNKIES NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE OC SO PEOPLE WITH REAL PAIN CAN FUNCTION IN SOCIETY AND WORK TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILY..IF THIS WAS TAKEN AWAY MY LIFE WOULD BE MISERABLE AND I WOULDNT EVEN BE ABLE TO HARDLY WALK. SO FOR YOU PEOPLE IN REAL PAIN YOU KNOW WHERE IM COMING FROM.

John Lennon WRITES >>>>>
" All I want to know is do the oxycotin80op work."

It depends on what you mean by "work". If you mean "will they work as intended", then the answer is Yes.
<<<<<>>>>>

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY "WORK AS INTENDED." INTENDED BY WHOM? GIVEN THE CONTENT OF THE REST OF YOUR POST I'D GUESS YOU ARE NOT IN VALID PAIN, NOR DO YOU HAVE LEGITIMATE PRESCRIPTIONS FOR OXYCONTIN IN EITHER FORMULATION; OC OR OP. IF YOU MET THIS CRITERIA YOU'D NOT MAKE THE STATEMENT SAYING THEY WORK AS INTENDED. THE OP'S MAY WORK AS A DETERRENT TO ABUSERS BUT THEY MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT KILL PAIN AS WELL AS OC'S. IF THEY WERE "INTENDED" TO DO THAT, THE "ANSWER" IS A DEFINITE NO*

MOST LEGITIMATE PEOPLE WITH VALID PRESCRIPTIONS, WHO HAVE TAKEN BOTH THE OC'S AND THE OP'S, WILL AGREE WITH ME.

THE NEW PEOPLE ON OXY'S WHO HAVE ONLY BEEN EXPOSED TO THE NEW FORMULATION OP's WOULD NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE IN PAINKILLING EFFICACY DON'T KNOW THAT IT IS SUBSTANTIAL AND THAT THE OC'S DID NOT CAUSE THE STOMACH UPSET. SPEAKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, I AM SUFFERING FROM SO MUCH MORE PAIN SINCE THE CHANGE, IT SCARES ME. LIKE I SAID BEFORE... WHEN I GO TO BED, I FEEL LIKE I'D LIKE NOT WAKE UP AT ALL. TO SAY MORE THAN THAT I'D RISK PEOPLE TELLING ME THEY'D HAVE SUICIDE PREVENTION FORCED ON ME. FRANKLY, I DON'T HAVE THE GUTS TO GO THAT WAY AND WOULDN'T. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TALK TO AND WHAT YOU SAY OR YOU MAY HAVE THE "DANGER TO SELF AND OTHERS" ROUTINE PUT ON YOU. JUST BE CAREFUL IF YOU VALUE YOUR FREEDOM. I ONLY USE IT AS ANALOGY TO TRY AND CONVEY HOW BAD THE PAIN IS. I KNOW THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO ARE GOING THROUGH WHAT I AM AND I KNOW YOU ARE ANGERED BY STATEMENTS LIKE THE ONE John Lennon MADE, AND MANY ARE MUCH WORSE. GIVE 'EM ONE WEEK OF THIS LEVEL OF PAIN AND SEE WHAT THEY SAY THEN!

OH AND MY DOCTOR AND CREW CHOOSE NOT TO GIVE ME ANYTHING FOR "BREAK-THROUGH" PAIN. THEY SAY 'YOU ARE ON TOO MANY MEDS.' THEY TREAT ME LIKE I'M SOME DUMB PATIENT WHO KNOWS NOTHING. I HAVE A MEDICAL BACKGROUND. I KNOW MORE THAN THEY DO - NOT LESS! I'VE BEEN ON PAIN MEDS INCLUDING OXYCONTIN FOR OVER 6 YEARS. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE SUBJECT FOR ALL THOSE YEARS. THIS IS MY LIFE! OF COURSE I RESEARCHED IT! WHEN YOU TAKE EXTENDED RELEASE DRUGS LIKE OXYCONTIN YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TAKE "BREAK-THROUGH" MEDS. IT IS STANDARD PROCEDURE. AND THESE DOLTS THINK I'M THE IGNORANT ONE. GO FIGURE. AS FOR TOO MANY DRUGS; THIS DOCTOR HAS TAKEN AWAY TWO MEDS I'D BEEN TAKING FOR YEARS AND TRIED TO REDUCE MY OXY BY 50%

" All I want to know is do the oxycotin80op work."

It depends on what you mean by "work". If you mean "will they work as intended", then the answer is Yes.

If you mean "Can I defeat the delayed release mechanism", the answer is "Not unless you have a degree in chemistry and all the right equipment". While you could grind them to a powder with a dremel tool or a "pedi-Paws", the resulting powder will not release the drug at a faster rate than a whole tablet will. Surface area is not a significant factor with this design. No matter how small your particles are, until you approach the size of individual molecules, it is the rate of diffusion through the entangled polymer chains that ultimately determines the release rate.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RESPOND. I KNEW IN MY HEART YOU WERE DOING THE BEST YOU COULD WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS IMPOSED BY FREEDOM OF SPEECH, ETC. THIS PROVES I WAS RIGHT AND THAT YOU TRULY CARE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR RESPONDING. IT GIVES ME HOPE.

SORRY FOR THE 'CAPS' I HAVE VERY BAD PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY IN MY HANDS AND IT IS EASIER TO TYPE IN 'CAPS'. I USED TO TYPE 65 WPM. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING TO HAVE TO 'HUNT AND PECK.' IT TAKES FOREVER AND IT IS QUITE PAINFUL. I CAN BARELY BUTTON UP A SHIRT, ALSO THEY HURT TERRIBLY AND SHAKE. THEY ARE IN CONSTANT PAIN. I'M NOT WHINING
JUST EXPLAINING THE REASON FOR THE CAPS. AND THIS PAIN IS YET ANOTHER REASON I HATE THE NEW OXY OP'S.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR REPLY, CW

I REALLY WISH THE BOARDS COULD FIND A WAY TO SEPARATE POSTS SUCH AS THIS ONE ABOVE BY GRAY. IT GETS FRUSTRATING TO LOOK FOR MESSAGES POSTED BY PEOPLE WHO ARE IN LEGITIMATE PAIN AND HAVE LEGIT SCRIPTS TO GET OXY. I WANT TO KNOW THEIR OPINIONS REGARDING THE FORMULATION CHANGE, ETC. INSTEAD, THE BOARDS ARE FULL OF POSTS BY ABUSERS TELLING HOW TO PREPARE THE OP'S SO THEY CAN GET HIGH ON THEM AND CRAP LIKE THAT. IT ANGERS ME THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF POSTS FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY. AND THIS IS JUSTIFIED BY THE 'FREEDOM OF SPEECH' PLEA. WELL, TO ME IT DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT. I'M NOT TRYING TO BREAK ANY RULES OR TELL THOSE WHO RUN MESSAGE BASES HOW TO RUN THEM. I'M JUST STATING MY OPINION. I SUPPOSE THINGS HAVE TO BE AS THEY ARE, FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND ALL. I JUST DON'T CARE MUCH FOR SEEMINGLY INEVITABLE RESULT.

OH, AND GRAY.... DON'T YOU THINK YOU TROLLING IS MORE THAN A LITTLE OFF-TOPIC?

TO OXY WHO SIMPLY LEFT A POST ASKING "DO THE NEW OXY 80S GET YOU HIGH"
<<<>>> I SAY WHO CARES IF THEY GET YOU HIGH? THE REAL QUESTION SHOULD BE DO THEY TAKE AWAY PAIN AS WELL AS THE ORIGINAL FORMULATION; THE OC'S.
THE ANSWER IS A DEFINITE NO! I'VE BEEN TAKING THE REAL OXYCONTIN OC'S FOR OVER 5 YEARS AND WHEN THEY CHANGED THE FORMULATION I NOTICED THE DIFFERENCE IMMEDIATELY. SUDDENLY I WAS IN MUCH MORE PAIN. IT WAS THEN THAT I NOTICED THE OP ON BACK OF THE PILL. IT WAS THEN WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE CHANGE. UP TO THAT POINT I'D HEARD NOTHING ABOUT THE REFORMULATION. FOR ME THE OP'S ARE ONLY ABOUT 60 TO 65% AS EFFECTIVE IN KILLING PAIN. I AM NOW IN TERRIBLE PAIN DAY AND NIGHT. IT IS SO BAD I WISH I WOULD GO TO BED AND NOT WAKE UP. AND MY DOCTOR REFUSES TO GIVE ME 'BREAK-THROUGH' MEDS.

Purdue for the most obvious reason changed the package. Turned around and put all the Generic manufacturers in a single bag and flushed them away.
The new OP product is given to thousands of new people daily who no JACK S--t about the old OC's. Pretty soon all the complaining will stop. Why because Purdue has completed the transformation. And $$$ talks and we all know the rest. It is very wrong to play with people's problems. PAIN Is real ! they know that.
But do they care ???

Dear Fed Up With The Whole Op Thing,

There are two types of messages posted on most boards concerning oxycontin. The first type is the clear rational, well presented composition.

The second type appears to be a stream of consciousness posting with several telltale characteristics. The poster would be unable to spell if his life depended on it, and if he has any understanding of what a grammar is, particularly the English grammar, he either chooses not to, or is unable to, use it to make himself understood.

Your post appears to fall into the latter category.

Do you think you could reword it according to the conventions of the English language, so that we may make sense of your posting?

As an aside, it is almost always the junkies who either cannot or will not do what is necessary to make themselves understood. Is that the reason that you choose not to spell correctly and use a grammar for a language other than English? Is the grammar that you are using one that is formally defined for, and used by junkies?

This past summer, the drug OxyContin, which I have been taking for severe spinal pain was replaced with a reformulated version to prevent abuse by junkies. It's manufacturer, Purdue Pharma, who is marketing the new drug under the same name as the old one, claims that the new formula is biocompatible with the original formula, but the experience of many patients runs contradictory to those claims. A posting by an unhappy Purdue employee estimated a month ago that Purdue has received over 700,000 complaints. FDA meetings held with Purdue in compliance with FDA post-marketing requirements seem to have focused exclusively on the drug's success in preventing abuse, with no mention of customer complaints over it's safety and effectiveness. Most complaints seem to have to do with the new drug not being as effective as the old drug, and causing side effects not seen with it, either. Unfortunately, there are quite a few junkie web sites where the junkies are complaining, and the only mention made by Purdue to the FDA about complaints revolves around these sites discussing the junkies unsuccessful attempts to thwart the new drug's abuse protection. There are many more legitimate chronic pain patients who are unhappy with the new drug than there are unhappy junkies. Unfortunately, the junkies are more vociferous. They are, however, detectable by their poor grammar, atrocious spelling, and stream-of-consciousness prose. To see the full extent of the real problem, one must discuss the issue with medical practitioners who are seeing compliant patients no longer experiencing the adequate pain relief they have been accustomed to, or who are even experiencing withdrawal symptoms. I've examined the studies performed by Purdue myself, and find them lacking for the introduction of a drug changed as profoundly as this one has. They have performed only Phase 1 studies on healthy subjects who have never needed pain medication. To test this drug, which is intended to only work properly after several doses have been taken and continue to be taken on a regular basis, subjects were given exactly one tablet, after which any adverse events were noted and blood serum levels were recorded. No attempt was made to evaluate effectiveness of pain relief after the single dose, let alone the round-the-clock dosing that the target market needs the drug for. All 8 Phase 1 clinical trials may be found at clinicaltrials.gov, where you can access them by simply entering "reformulated oxycontin" in the search box.

Some sample reports of problems are at a related thread The New Oxycontin With The Imprint Op Compared To The Old Oxycontin With The Old Imprint Oc.

I have compared the ingredient lists of the old and new formulas. The main ingredient (besides oxycodone itself) in the old formula was ammonio methacrylate copolymer,in the form of a rigid insoluble matrix that slowly released the pain medication over an extended period of time. With the reformulation, the release matrix is made from a polymer named PolyOx, a Dow trademark for polyethylene oxide (PEO), which encapsulates tiny medication particles. When wet, it greedily absorbs a large amount of water to form a gel that passes through the digestive tract, slowly releasing the drug only from the gel's surface. I have a weak anal sphincter muscle, the result of multiple surgeries for complications of Crohn's disease. The gel that this product forms mixes with stool, and when the constipating effect of the narcotic medicine slows peristalsis, pressure builds up, forcing the stool against the anal sphincter. Unlike with the previous formula, however, the water retaining attribute of the PEO acts as a lubricant, forcing stool through the weakened sphincter, causing daily incontinence that I did not have with the previous drug called OxyContin. While I admit that most patients will not have an anal sphincter weakened by surgery, many Crohn's patients (and AIDS patients, according to my surgeon) may, as well as will many elderly patients who do not have as good control over their anal sphincter muscles as they once did. So while the side effect I am experiencing is not one of the more common ones that have cropped up with the new formula, I am not alone either, and many more patients are experiencing more mainstream types of side effects that were introduced when OxyContin was replaced by a new drug bearing the same name.

Purdue Pharm did not do a correct study before they released the original OC as I was told by an attorney. Everyone found out that they did not do a proper clinical study and released it saying it lasted 12 hrs. It came out when they took the company to court for releasing the generic version of the OC. Thats why after a few years they put out it lasted only 6 to 8 hrs not 12hrs. There was not any study done with the new OP's either I wonder is it like eating chewing gum 3 times a day .what does that crap do when it is in your body. If you swollow your chewing gum everyday isn't that bad? the new op's are going into your system and turning into something similar to chewing gum 3 times a day it does not break down, that has to be bad for you, I would think?

The original oc is all over the place where I live. Keep hearing of the switch. But nothing yet. Oc 80 and 40 available and easier to find and get than tylenol3

@Mr B:

Yes, explaining to our doctors why we need more because of the change in the formula when Purdue went from the OC's to the OP's looks bad, or suspicious. And if the doctor were to ask a Purdue rep about it; the Purdue rep would deny there was any substantial difference. Besides, most doctors would not even go to the trouble to look into it; mine sure would not. Purdue has been lying for years about the OC's lasting 12 hours. Everyone I've ever talked to who was taking a substantial amount of Oxycontin for severe pain agrees with me that it lasted between 7.5 and 8 hours and takes 1.5 to 2 hours for you to feel it start working, and I'm talking about the real Oxys, the OC's. Don't get me wrong, I would do anything to be able to get the original OCs again. I am merely pointing out that Purdue has been lying from the beginning. So all along doctors have been prescribing on the basis that they lasted 12 hours, which was simply not true. But try and tell them different and they think you are up to something.

I have ALWAYS taken my meds as prescribed. I just don't like a company misrepresenting what a product will do, which translates into more pain for we legitimate prescribees. Thank God they got rid of the generics! Life was fairly livable.

NOW, WITH THE CHANGE TO OP'S I AM IN SO MUCH PAIN, I GO TO BED HOPING I WON'T WAKE UP. THIS BECAUSE OF ABUSERS !? IT MAKES NO SENSE!
OH, AND PART OF THIS PROFIT MOTIVATED! THAT'S RIGHT; PURDUE IS MAKING ***MORE*** MONEY SINCE THE CHANGE.

I have taken oxycotin for 14 years and I have tried for 2 weeks to use the new 80's. I have titanium in several places in my back and body and can barely walk. I used the 80's 3 times a day with norco for brake through pain. I am now taking more medication then I should because the new 80's do not work as well (not even close). I never abused them but now I have to explain to my doctor that I had to take more then I was prescribed. I made an appointment with him this week coming to ask what he could do. I emailed perdue pharmacuticals and they called me (I was surprized)and told me to get in touch with my doctor and tell him my problem and that there are several other new medications that are similar now on the market.

I have to agree with most everyone on here. I was blown up by a roadside bomb twice in one week. Second one got me pretty good and have had 6 surgeries in the last 2 years. The problem I am going to have is I just went from active Army to the VA and just met my doc. THe ops do not work as well or as long as the ocs. having a brand new doc and asking for a different pain med never looks good, no matter how well documented your medical conditions are. Plus I don't have a choice to go to any pharmacy, if the VA pharmacy doesn't carry it, then I don't get to try to go somewhere else. Again like alot of you said. Thank you very much to all you abusers. To everyone in pain I hope you find something that ends your suffering. Now I have the fun of looking at a couple more surgeries, more lifetime pain, and a less than proud end to my military career. Then again I am better off than the 4000 plus that came home in a coffin. So I really have little room to complain. Take care all.

I been on oc's since 2001 when I fell 35 feet down elevator shaft. the last few months I got hurting really bad, my doctor says he is writing as much oc's as he can which was 60-80s oxycontion and 120-15mg oxycodone which I had been on for the last three years. He told me I would have to go to pain Mangement, it took 7 weeks to get in to a doctor and he upped me to 3-80mg oxycontion a day from two, and gave me 150-15mg a month so I thought I was going to be pain something I have not been in 10 years then I got those op's and they just do not work so now i have to be in pain so bad I feel like blowing my head off Because people want to get high by crushing them for a needle, those people are going to go get the herion and in the mean time us people who need the oxy's are going to suffer with pain and get sick, the bad guy win again!! My oc's come from a doctor and I should not have to suffer because of someone wanting to get high, The new op's just don't work like the oc's THe time you have to wait for them to work is just crazy and they don't last nowhere as long
