Oxycontin 60mg Cutting In Half

Please note that according to NIH, "OxyContin tablets are a controlled-release oral formulation of oxycodone hydrochloride indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain when a continuous, around-the-clock analgesic is needed for an extended period of time.

OxyContin 60 mg, 80 mg, and 160 mg Tablets, or a single dose greater than 40 mg, ARE FOR USE IN OPIOID-TOLERANT PATIENTS ONLY. A single dose greater than 40 mg, or total daily doses greater than 80 mg, may cause fatal respiratory depression when administered to patients who are not tolerant to the respiratory depressant effects of opioids.

OxyContin TABLETS ARE TO BE SWALLOWED WHOLE AND ARE NOT TO BE BROKEN OR CHEWED. TAKING BROKEN OR CHEWED OxyContin TABLETS LEADS TO RAPID RELEASE AND ABSORPTION OF A POTENTIALLY FATAL DOSE OF OXYCODONE."

Thank you for sharing this drug safety information. I think a lot of new patients taking narcotic pain meds are prone to underestimate the risk of taking too much and how that might impair respiratory function among other undesirable side effects. Taking our medications exactly as prescribed ensures that this will not happen. However when someone is in dire pain and distress and their pain meds aren't taking care of it, the urge to take more for added relief should be properly addressed by their prescribing doctor, who in an ideal scenario would work closely with their patient, making adjustments to the type of medication, dose, and/or frequency of administration. Too many people who aren't educated on this topic rely on their instincts on how much to take while in an inebriated or disoriented state of mind. Simply being a responsible patient is the best preventative measure to overdosing in my opinion.

That's why I posted my message. I worked in medical field and it's so sad to see ppl that are so addicted or uneducated in meds. I wish the Drs. Or a qualified person would sit and really plain meds to patients. Even if it saved only a couple ppl, it could make hem more alert for their kids or others around them. It is not pretty to see either someone uneducated so scared or the addict that might now be scared. I personally with ADHD take all precautions. I just had Dr give two injections of steroid and caused my brain to be in flight mood for 72 hrs. I could not sleep. It was horrific. I notified immediately. I believe it was because two injections given instead of one. Just don't take a chanc, especially if you don't remember if you took, don't take again.
