Oxycontin 12 Hour Time Release 2x Day
UpdatedMy tolerance is of course increasing to this prescription and I can not get a new stronger does from my Doctor as this med facility has strong rules against it. So since this does wears off after 6 - 8 hours can't I basically just increase to 3X/day by taking it every 8 hours instead?
Here's a strange twist to my story: My Dr. said no to an increase in dosage and referred me to an outside pain specialist for my pain meds BUT! I also noticed that for the last two months my monthly prescription labeled for 60 tabs actually has about a weeks worth of extra oxy's. I know I'm not missing any doses. Any opinions?

Hello, B Hughes! How are you?
If you up your dosage on your own, you're going to run out early, which could end up with your doctor flagging you as an abuser/addict. The fact that the prescription was written for 60 tablets and has more than that in it is due to a pharmacy error, not your doctor.
According to the FDA, this is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Have you tried seeing the doctor they referred you to? That should be the easiest way to get the help you need.
Why can doctors NOT understand that people build up tolerances to meds? It is EXTREMELY common and in most cases DOES occur with ER ( extended release) meds...aka, MS Contin, OxyContin, etc. However, if you are already at a higher dose, say 80mg bid ( twice daily) and have only been at that dose a short while, I can understand a docs reluctance. ( that was meant for B Hughes) because you did not state your dose or length of time at that dose. On the other hand, no 2 persons are created equal and what works for one may not work for another. A doctor can prescribe whatever dose he/she knows is needed without causing harm to a patient without fear of reprimand.....but, the freakin DEA has them so scared they are leaving their patients with minimal pain control.....especially within the last couple of years due to all the pill mills, etc. We need to be treated with what WORKS, not with just what the doc feels comfortable prescribing. I did read that if a dr is prescribing responsible and doing the necessary patient visits, lab work, pain assessments, etc then the DEA cannot reprimand them for prescribing according to his rights and his oath to FIRST DO NO HARM. Addiction is extremely low in chronic pain patients.....1.7%........when the pain is legit. However, there are circumstances to see otherwise....hence the 1.7%. IMHO, it is far better to actively treat pain than to under treat and force people to look at illegal ways to get more meds and/or obtaining illegal drugs such as H to relieve pain......which this whole "war on drugs" has caused! Of course, these are my opinions but the basis for them is not uneducated.....quite the contrary!
If I take my 80 mg op then fall asleep on it for a couple hours will it still work when o wale up

Yes, you're sleeping will not alter its efficacy.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
For the real patients that have chronic pain an have a doctor that is willing to give them OxyContin 40mg for 2 a day every12 hours. You all should be grateful and take it. Hell, it is prescribed to you. I read these forums and all I hear about is people b****ing about wanting more, it's not enough, not enough strength. You all should be grateful you got what you have and take it correctly and if you decide to take more than you should and run short before you can obtain another prescription well that's just your own stupidity. I am on OxyContin ER I take exactly what is on the prescription two times a day!! I have no problem with this I just wish people were grateful and thank the Lord they even got the pain medicine. There's a lot of people out there that have real real and they are unable to get the medication they need and they suffer every day. So let's write something better then b****ing and moaning about it. It is real simple if you don't like your doctor then get another one, but don't keep going back to him thinking that he's going to change his mind. You guys just need to think before you talk.
