Oral Vs Intravenous
UpdatedI take 2 60 mg morphine sulfate er 3 times a day. What would be the equivalent for IV usage. I will have a 3 port chest cath shortly and was wondering if IV pain medication would control pain better and if so at what dosage to achieve the same effect as what I am taking or even slightly stronger.

Each 60mg oral dosage is equivalent to about 24mgs via IV, but you will not get the same time release as you do from the oral, so your doctor may need to adjust your dosage, and administration of it, accordingly.
The FDA warns that Morphine carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and headache.
The pain control can be better for some people, via IV, but not everyone responds well to it. The only thing you can do is try it, if your doctor approves, and see if it works for you.
Is there anything else I can help with?
