Tramadol is a good medication especially for arthritis, and I can tell you this works better then many of the other medications which have a variety of side effects, and are more costly. I have a plate, and screws in one hand, as well as neuropothy in both of my legs, and tramadol helps with the pain. I could care less if they don't want to prescribe pain killers, because the tramadol are just as effective, and are cheaper. The Dr has now given me grief when prescribing me the tramadol because of the DEA, are you kidding me? What is troubling is somewhere along the line, they have forgotten about the quality of care, and relief some medications provide. Its not like I am asking for Oxy, or other strong narcotics, so what is the problem? The Dr. of course wants someone like me, 61yr old guy to go to a pain clinic? For what, to end up spending more money? Arthritis, and neuropothy don't go away, and mine is severe in the hands to go with a plate, and eight screws that are there for life. The neuropothy can be very painful with bad cramps that wake me up out of my sleep. I take four a day, 2 in the morning, and 2 in the evening, and there maybe days I don't need any, but having them there when I need them is very helpful. I am so sick of this bulls*** war on drugs, because they throw other people needing medication under a bus because Drs. become too frightened to prescribe medication like tramadol...I understand about drug abuse and street drugs but leave the clinics alone and stop trying to go after medication like tramadol which do wonders for ones quality of care.....

Hello, Joejustice! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.

The issue is that Tramadol has now been reclassified as an opioid, so if you require it on a long-term ongoing basis, your doctor is supposed to refer you to pain management. I'm sorry, I know it is inconvenient and expensive, but it applies to everyone throughout the U.S.. Exceptions are only made for patients with intractable pain from a possibly fatal condition, such as stage 4 cancer.

The FDA lists this medication as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Have you considered trying pain management?
