Hi Mikki,
My husband and my 24 yr old son have ADHD w/ LD. My 16 yr old son has ADHD. My oldest son was first put on Ritalin in grade school and became an emotional basket case so he was then put on Cilert. I had requested educational testing be done by the school district so he could receive the additional educational and physcological help he needed but was refused. I took him off his medication and received a call from his teacher on a daily basis complaning that he was constantly disrupting the class. I told her I had taken him off his medication and until he received testing he would remain off his medication. I was contacted two days later with a time and date for him to be tested. He did very well for four years, however, even though I took him in every 4 months for blood work as directed by his doctor, he suffered liver damage from the medication. Suprisingly, his blood work and liver enzimes came out fine then four months later, after his next blood test, he was found to be suffering from liver damage and had to come off all meds for life. Even though my younger son showed signs of ADHD at an early age (mainly physical ticks) he excelled in school, but when he reached middle school everything seemed to fall apart. To spite our family history and his failing grades the school district refused to test him for four straight years. With great reluctance and out of desperation, I had him put on medication. He was first put on Adderall. He became very lethargic, suffered a complete loss of appetite and lost a ton of weight. Then he was put on Stratara which had no effect at all other than making him sick to his stomach. Then he was put on Concerta which made him extremely violent and suicidal. All the medications he tried kept him awake at night. He was taken off all medication and I finally convinced the school district phsycologist, whom I had become friends (our daughters played vollyball together), to perform an educational evaluation on him in which the results made him elligable for a 501 program and further testing was done which made him elliable for an IEP and was placed in an exceptional education program. Unfortunately, the program fell far short in overseeing that his academic team followed the accommodations of his IEP and did nothing to teach him the coping and organization skiills he needed to become successful in school to spite countless conferences and 3 IEP reviews that first year. I eventually had to go to the State Department of Education and threaten to file a formal complaint with the state to get our school district to take action to resolve the issues my son was facing. This year was much more successful for him but he still has a long way to go and is now a Junior in high school (the clock is ticking) The best advice I can give you is to educate yourself and fight for your child's legal rights. Contact your State Department of Education (Child Advacacy). They will supply you with a ton of information regarding your childs legal rights that your school district may not. If medication is working well enough for your child that he/she is not causing a disturbance within the classroom your child will probably not receive the testing required for him/her to receive the IEP accommodations needed to reach his/her greatest potential. If you opt to stay with medicating your child, don't rely on the sole opinion of your physician. His/her intentions probably have your childs best interests at heart, but remember, they are only human and make mistakes too.
Good Luck,
Dawn
