My father has been taking 300 mg of neurontin every morning for approximately 3 years for treatment of neuropathic pain in his feet. He was diagnosed with dementia at least two years ago and his confusion and psychosis has progressively worsened. A nurse friend of mine told me I should immediately take him off the drug since her pharmacist advised her to do the same with her father whose psychotic behavior became worse when he started neurontin. She reports a remarkable improvement after he was off the drug three days. Should I try this and what are the risks?
For anyone still seeking this information, since this medication works on brain chemicals, because it is an anticonvulsant, it should be slowly tapered, unless there is an emergency requiring that it be stopped immediately.
For instance, someone in Teri's situation should consult their doctor for an appropriate tapering schedule to get off the medication as safely as possible, while minimizing the withdrawal and rebound effects.
But in the case of Vicki's dad, it may be necessary to stop it abruptly, without tapering. But there are risks, his conditions may worsen at first and there is a danger of seizures, so this should never be done without a doctor's approval.
