Need New Pain Dr Bessemer Al Or Surrounding Area

Hi! My pain dr that I've been going to for years is retiring & my primary doesn't want to write my script for my Oxycodone. I've called everyone I know to call & most are not taking new patients or they want to put me on Suboxone & I can't even come close to affording them plus everyone I've talked to says they won't work. I can get a referral & medical records so that is no problem. I'm just trying to find a new dr anywhere from Birmingham, Al to Tuscaloosa, Al. Does anyone know one?
Thank you

Hi BL,
Thank you for the suggestion but I have state ins & they don't list pain specialist @ all. They would only give me a list of internal medicine drs & family drs.
PCP's can still prescribe pain meds for chronic pain, but very few choose to. There are no new federal regulations stating that only pain drs can prescribe pain meds for chronic pain. But, it is best to use a pain dr. Call your insurance company and get a list of pain drs that take your insurance.
Hi Verwon,
Thank you for responding to my question. When I've called different drs I've explained the situation & they ask me what meds I'm on so I tell them. I believe you're probably right tho, I even get "that look" from the young girls that work in the pharmacy that I use. My PCP suggested one, I called them & found out they don't take my Ins so I called my PCP back & asked if he could refer someone else & he simply said no that I'll have to find one on my own. Needless to say I was VERY shocked by his attitude because I've been going to him for quite a while & he has always been very understanding & compassionate. Honestly I've been floored over this whole situation. I'm getting nervous now as I've been trying to find someone for a few weeks w/ no luck & my Pain Management drs retirement date is fast approaching...
Due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, your PCP cannot prescribe it for you on a long-term ongoing basis, you have to see a pain management specialist for that.
As to the reaction you got from your phone calls, that is normal if you're calling and asking them over the phone if they'll prescribe Oxycodone. Doctors will view that as being drug seeking behavior, which may be what some of them were politely trying to say by suggesting Suboxone, since it is used to treat addiction.
Did you ask your primary if they have someone they can refer you to? That would likely be the easiest way to get in with a new doctor to get the help you need.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Can anyone recommend a good doctor in that area?
