Narcotics Used In Combination With The Fentanyl Patch (Top voted first)

Updated

I am 46 and hv been diagnosed with severe lumbar spinal stenosis, protruding disc, etc. I have taken aspirin, tylenol, t3, ibuprophen, tramodol, anti - depressants, muscle relaxers, and vicodin most recent along with the Fentanyl patch 25mg. This is the first time in my life I've had a significant relief of pain. The problem is that the pain is coming back after being on these 2 meds for about 3months. My doctor is hesitant about giving any other narcotics in addition to the patch. I'd like to know if anyone knows what other narcotic works well with the patch and how do I suggest this to my doctor without her being suspicious.

The 25 patch is just the first step. My Dr. only had me on that for about 3 weeks, then the 50 and I am now on a 75 and doing okay. I have been on the 75 for about 3 years, I use narco's or percocet for break through pain. Your body does get used to a med and will need more of it to keep the pain away. I see a pain Dr. who is very good about switching me around to keep me out of pain. Good luck.

DON'T KNOW ABOUT NARCOTICS BUT REGARDING THE PROTRUDING DISCS IF THEY ARE IN YOUR LOWER BACK...A SIMPLE EXCERCISE HELPED ME. I HAD A PROTRUDING DISC AND PAIN SHOOTING DOWN MY LEGS.

THIS MAY BE TOO SIMPLE BUT I WENT TO A PHYSICAL THERAPIST AT MY DOCTORS REC.
THIS IS WHAT I DID: LAY ON YOUR STOMACH
AND THEN CAREFULLY GET ON YOUR ELBOWS
(MAY BE A LITTLE PAINFUL SO DO IT VERY SLOWLY
OR WAIT AND REPEAT IF THE PAIN IS UNBEARABLE). AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS THIS ARCHING OF THE LOWER BACK, CAUSED MY DISC
TO MOVE TOWARD THE FRONT OF MY BODY AND
ALIGNED WITH MY SPINAL COLUMN........
THIS INFO MAY BE USELESS IN YOUR SITUATION
BUT IT WORKED A "MIRACLE" WITH MY BACK.

GOOD LUCK...

yes what you describe is also called the McKenzie Method for Back Pain and Neck Pain
Google it
it is a time honored method of exercises.
they may not work for everyone, but if it helps, it can beat surgery.
look it up

I have chronic back pain as well, and I have taken every opiate known to man. I was on 100mcgs of Fentanyl, Norcos, and Valium at the same time! What worked for me the best was getting off everything and taking anti-inflammatories. What happens is that your body and brain become addicted to the drugs and your brain sends out a false sense of pain to your body. Besides, the withdrawal symtoms (addicted or not) are WORSE THAN HEROIN! Trust me! I now have very low back pain through exercising and anti-inflammatories. FENTANYL WILL KILL YOU! STOP TAKING IT!

It is normal for your body to get used to whatever dosage you are currently taking and for you to require a medication adjustment. There is no precise time frame, because it can vary from person to person. Some people can take the same dosage of a medication for years and it will keep working, while others need to make changes much sooner, such as you are experiencing.

There is a higher dose of the Fentanyl patch that you could discuss with her. It is also available in a 50mcg dosage. For cases of severe pain, it can also be prescribed to be changed every 2 days, rather than every 3.

For the brief period of time that I used the patch, my doctor also prescribed an instant release Oxycodone that I could take up to 3 times a day to help get my pain under control. The name brand for it is OxyIR.

There is also an instant release Morphine that is available, which may help.

As to her suspicions, your best approach is to just talk about the problems you are having with your pain, without specifically asking for anything. Let her reach the conclusion that changes have to be made.

If she doesn't, then you could always just ask her what you can do for it.

Is there anything else I can help with?
