Muscle/nerve Ache With Eliquis And Niacin Or Statin (Page 7)

Updated

Since starting Eliquis, I have felt much stiffer and sore in the mornings and during the day with muscle tightness in my neck and back affecting my upper arms. A general sense of early aging that is unpleasant. Anyone else with these symptoms?

I've been on Eliquis for approx. 8 weeks along with a statin. In the past 2 weeks I have noticed considerable back and leg ache. I'm 75 and very active. I plan to call my cardiologist tomorrow.

An update on my experience. I am about to have surgery to replace a hip. I have been off of eliquis for 3 days now and the pain and tiredness I have been experiencing are gone. I have been taking lovenox for the past 3 days and seem to have none of the same symptoms as I did with eliquis. It is nice to know that my side effects went away quickly. I am going to see if I can try a different alternative after surgery.

I have just started taking Eliquis for the second day and all night I had leg and foot cramps and unable to sleep. Anyone else with these symptoms? I have also been taken off flecainide acetate after 2 years could this also contribute to the problem?

Yes, I have arthritis anyway but I am aching so much worse. I almost can not function because of pain.

I have been on Eliquis ( 5mg x 2 daily) for nearly a year for afib. I'm now 73 (male) and until recently have always walked/slow run 4 miles daily. Maintained about 175 lbs and in other-words, always been relatively healthy. About 3 months ago I developed severe neck and shoulder pain. Ibuprofen, robaxin, or any o.t.c would not stop the pain. I even went to the E.R. The "doctors" say is not because of Eliquis. Today I hurt so bad I could hardly do anything. I'm glad I read this blog. I believe without doubt it is the Eliquis!

I also have had severe leg and foot cramps since taking eliquis. Dr., of course, denys ever hearing this. Refused to take me off or cut down the dosage. Hoping they will get better with time.

I don't know why doctors refuse to believe that eliquis is causing all theses aches and pains in so many people. When I started getting severe back pain I stopped taking eliquis and the pain went away. That was back in March. My dr still thinks I'm taking it but hey, he's not the one with the pain.

There seems to be lots of problems with this Eliquis drug and I can confirm that. I have the worst foot cramps you could imagine with lack of sleep and since starting this drug I have developed muscle weakness in my right eye for which I've seen an Optician, Eye Specialist and finally a Neurologist. Feeling like someone has punched me in the eye and my eye will not open, then it settles down a little during the day and starts all over again. This drug has been so bad that when I was sent to a Neurologist she like many other people were looking for other medical problems. I suggested it could be the medication and she almost ate me alive! At one point they were going to give me all sorts of drugs, one being for a Muscle Wasting disease and another for Neuropathic Pain I refused as the diagnostics were negative and I have just stuck to Co-Codamol.

While on this TERRIBLE drug remember you Must not take Ibuprofen or any other NSAID drugs as they can cause stomach problems and bleeds and not many doctors will offer you them as they are dangerous. Always check with a Chemist before taking over the counter medications while on Eliquis. For those taking Statins read info inside the packet one of the biggest problems with this drug is SEVERE leg pain and most people I know have this along with foot cramps another side effect is Pancreatitis 2 people I know have recently ended up in hospital. A review of Eliquis is long overdue and one must ask themselves the question what will become of us way down the line---wish I had never been put on the stuff.

I'm a 68 yr. male. At about 7:00 a.m., June 15, 2017, I became extremely short of breath after walking up a set of stairs at home. Immediately, I went to the local ER and after a CT scan, was diagnosed with a blood clot in each lung. Later this day at about 9:00 p.m., I was started on Eliquis 10mg. I woke up the next morning at the hospital with a very very sore back. A few hours later the nurse came in with a follow up 10mg dosage. I've been prescribed 10mg, twice per day. Ever since beginning this medication, I've experienced pretty severe pain in my lower back, bi-laterally but mainly on the left. Now, my normal activity level has decreased to the point where I can't do much of anything that demands a certain level of physical exertion. I did not have this problem prior to beginning Eliquis. While at the hospital, I asked a couple physicians about side effects of Eliquis and the only thing mentioned was potential for bleeding. I'll be seeing my doctor in a couple of days to explore this further.

I have a connective tissue disease and had a virus attack my heart in 2009. I have had AFIB off and on since then and had a ablation which worked for awhile. I was put on Eliquis and after a day my joints were on fire. I knew it was the Eliquis. I stopped taking it and the pain was normal the next day.

Yes I have definitely had these same symptoms. I have had to try physical therapy, a soft tissue ultrasound, an ankle brachial index, and an x-ray of my leg - all of which did not show other causes such as lesions or clot or fracture. My feet hurt in the mornings and I have pain in my right lower shin. Also stiff neck and shoulders. None of this was happening before the Eliquis.

I am experiencing the same thing. I started Eliquis March 28, 2017. I am 57. Very stiff and achy in the morning, and if I sit for longer periods...like after driving. Once I move around, it gets better. I will try the Tylenol..

I guess I must be one of the lucky ones taking Eliquis. I have been on it since January 2015 for Atrial Fibilation, I also have two stents as well. I do get low back ache for which I regularly see an Osteopath, but he does not attribute it to my medication. I make regular blood test appointments at my surgery, even though I have not been told to do so, just so I can keep a check with what is going on. At the end of the day we must look after our bodies and be responsible rather than waiting for the odd random blood test. I think the fact that this drug helps to reduce blood clots and a stroke outweighs me ever thinking of coming off it.

Just read your article about Eliquis and actually someone must be stringing you along or you have not heard your doctor correctly. If you are in the U.K there are evaluations for older anticoagulants (i.e. Warfarin) where there was weekly diagnostics, then this new Eliquis wonder drug came out and presto they don't need to do blood work every week BUT just once a year and it's only for Kidney Function taking away the need to do blood work on a regular basis.

My experience is that Eliquis, in my opinion, IS FAR FROM BEING a WONDER DRUG!! I have (had) been taking Eliquis for the past 6 months, and in a very gradual and insidious manner, encountered debilitating side effects which I will proceed to describe. All are consistent with many of the posts on this wonderful website. So I finally came to the conclusion that it was the Eliquis causing the problem. My doctor was not sure, but said that switching to warfarin would be wise and that we will determine if Eliquis is a problem for me. I started warfarin about 2 weeks ago, and just after a few days, almost all of the side effects either vanished or were significantly lessened. After the third day off the Eliquis I brisk walked on my treadmill for 4.5 miles, just like the "old days". This continues to this date.

In the way of background, I am a 76 year-old retired Pharmacist, and I have been very active my entire life. I developed AFIB about 1 year ago "out of the blue". My only symptom is an irregular pulse, and I have never felt a thing other than my irregular pulse the entire time. My electrocardiologist informed me that NO TREATMENT other than anti-coagulant therapy are utilized in cases like mine. All evaluations with stress ECHO, ECHO, etc., were negative. My ejection fraction is 60%, and valves are intact and no ischemia or blockages, and no heart damage. I typically brisk walk on the treadmill 3 days a week for 70 minutes, going about 14 miles per week. I have done this or a variation for 35+ years. I also do lots of yard work and other strenuous activities. I have no symptoms whatsoever......just an irregular pulse.

After being on Eliquis for about 3-4 months, my QUALITY OF LIFE slowly went into the tank. Going on the treadmill became a really difficult experience.......and the "straw that broke the camel's back" was recently when I labored so much that I had to stop after just 2 miles. I was exhausted and my legs felt like they were lead ballasts. My chest was tight and breathing was a chore. I felt terrible, and never experienced this in my lifetime. THAT WAS IT! TIME TO ACT, AND ACT I DID!!! As many of the posts point out, I felt that I aged 20 years in a few months. The major reasons were tightness and aches in my neck and shoulders (pointed out in many of these postings), sense of balance declined (did not get dizzy), aches and weakness in my legs, tightness in my chest and lungs, poor sense of well being, and a great reduction in my QUALITY OF LIFE. So I told the doc, and he agreed that I needed a change here.

Eliquis is not for me. I may be an exception, but I doubt it, especially when I read the posts on this and other websites. AND KEEP IN MIND THAT ONLY ABOUT 5% OF COMPLAINTS LIKE THIS ARE FILED WITH THE FDA, ETC. This is a world -wide phenomenon. And the cautions and warnings sections of both these new drugs do state that muscle problems and balance issues are possible. But, in my opinion these need to be more specific in nature. They should list QUALITY OF LIFE and LACK OF SENSE OF WELL BEING, in my opinion.

Keep in mind that Eliquis and Xarelto, which are very TEMPTING to use because of the advantage of no periodic INR evaluations, are relatively new drugs, introduced in 2012 in the U.S. Consequently, in many instances the side effects when used in very large populations do not come up for long periods of time.....especially if they are INSIDIOUS, which was the case with me. So show this to your doctor if you suspect you have an issue, and do not let him or her convince you that "THIS IS IN YOUR HEAD", or "THIS IS NOT FROM ELIQUIS". Also, report any issues to FDA using the Med Watch Form on the internet, or phone FDA with your complaint and they will do the recording. And do not hesitate to phone the manufacturer.

I have been having extreme stiffness, muscle aches, and swelling of joints while on Eliquis. The odd thing is that I have been on it for nearly a year with no side effects. At the last refill of my prescription, these side effects started. The interesting thing is that shortly after I refilled this prescription, I received a call from the pharmacist asking me to check the color of the pills. Their explanation was that the manufacturer had mislabeled some of the Eliquis pills....put smaller mg's in larger mg packaging. do you believe that???

I never related my muscle weakness and pain to eliquis until a tv commercial caught my attention. I walk with a cane, so bad when I get up that I can hardly get to the next room. Seem to get worse every day. I'm going to ask him to give me coumidin. I went to a meeting at a friends recently and could not get up off her couch. How ridiculous!

I switched to Coumadin one month ago. Noticed some nice changes. Almost all the muscle weakness and tightness and aches in my shoulders have disappeared. I worked for several hours yesterday doing lots of yard work, and felt better at the end than the beginning. Brisk walking (4 MPH) on the treadmill is now back in my routine. So I strongly suspect it was the Eliquis. I have a suspicion that this problem may be more prevalent because of my age (76), and a rather high activity level. This issue of muscle problems seems to affect us older folks in a more pronounced manner, especially if we are ACTIVE. Just my opinion here, so take it for what this may be worth. No issues with Coumadin, but the INR testing is a little inconvenient. A small price to pay. My bruising is also less with Coumadin than with Eliquis. So I will continue with the OLD STANDBY...COUMADIN.

That sure sounds encouraging! I'm so happy for you. I sure hope I have results like that. I'd love to get out there and pull some weeds, lol.
