Morphine Vs Oxymorphone.

i am alergic to morphine and my doctor just put me on oxymorphone. he said i would be ok. does anyone know anything about this whether i will be ok with oxymorphone. i haven't taken any yet don't pick them till tomorrow. thanks.

It is an opiate, but not the same as Morphine. However, when someone is allergic to one medication, there is always a risk that they will discover more that they're allergic to, but the only thing you can do is try it and see.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Hi, oxy"morphone" is CALLED that BECAUSE it is OXYCODONE, hense the "OXY" in the name, and either MORPHINE or something VERY similar to it, or it wouldn't be CALLED "OXY'MORPHONE'". If you are allergic to MORPHINE, BE SURE TO TAKE A VERY SMALL AMOUNT TO START WITH TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE A ALLERGIC REACTION. GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm allergic to morphine too, it's the sulfa in the morphine that I'm allergic to. You might have an allergic reaction to the sulfa like I do.
Almost all the people I've been around who were allergic to morphine had an allergic reaction to sulfa. No other schedule ll opiate has sulfa in it other than morphine. You should be evaluated to find out exactly what you are allergic to! Here's a list of other schedule ll opiate analgesics that are ok to take if you just have an allergic reaction to sulfa: (Oxymorphone aka Opana), (Hydromorphone aka Dilaudid or Exalgo), (Meperidine aka Demerol), (Oxycodone aka Oxycontin, Roxicodone or Percocet), (Hydrocodone aka Zohydro, Norco, Vicodan or Lortab), (Methadone) and (Fentanyl patches). All of these different opiates work differently with different people. What works well for one person may not work as well for another person. Hopefully your doctor will work with you to find what analgesic works best for your particular pain situation. Also get ready for extremely expensive prescriptions because Morphine and Methadone are the cheapest and the rest are very expensive. I hope you have good prescription insurance! The long acting medications (CR controlled release/ER Extended Release) could put you in the poor house. Good luck with your analgesic situation...

From what I've been prescribed and learned over the years is that Oxymorphone is basically the same as he name brand a Opana. Oxycodone is Percocet and OxyContin . Oxymorphone is much stronger than than Oxycodone, 2 times the strength. It's simple to google to compare the two. I was on Percocet for break through pain and on OxyContin for extended release. I am now on Oxymorphone 40mg ER twice a day and Oxymorphone 10mg IR for breakthrough pain. Without a doubt the Oxymorphone is noticably stronger than the Oxycodone and by far treats my pain much better.

I was looking at more comparisons of the two medications. One of the pharmaceutical web sites said that the Oxymorphone is 15 times the strength of Oxycodone. That meds more sense to me as I notice a huge difference between the two. Hope this helped a bit.
