Morphine Vs Dilaudid (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have had occassional reactions to Morphine shots in ER (severe nausea/vomiting, hallucinations.) And began to think I was allergic or sensitive to it. When hospitalized for severe back pain and inability to sit up or walk, I was put on a pain pump of dilaudid and sent home on the pump. I had never heard of dilaudid before but lost my appetite and anything I ate, threw it up. In 6 weeks I lost 23 lbs, just lying in bed. I became weaker and weaker and began to think I was going to die. I had told the home nurse on several visits what was happening and she just said it was a side effect. Finally a male nurse did my home visit and when I told him, he said he needed to call the Dr., who recommended going to ER and having my electrolytes checked. While there I learned it was a drivitive of, or a synthetic form of morphine(?? True??). Was also given zofran(?) A chemo patient drug to help with severe nausea. While in ER I was so weak, hooked up to so many tubes, still unable to sit or walk and no relief from pain. I literally prayed that God would let me die, that I couldn't spend the rest of my life like this! I began to plan to do a DNR and living will? for end of care wishes. (I was only 52!! And a single mom of a 16 yr old son.) My older son visited that weekend from out of town and we had a long discussion re my end of life wishes. For some reason, on Monday when visiting nurse came I asked to remove pain pump. She had to call Dr. But he recommended against it. After she told me what Dr said I asked her if I have to do what he said. She told me no, it was my body and my choice, but if I needed it again they couldn't put one back in. I told her to take it out, which she did. (I felt sure I would die if left in.) From that day I began to feel better and continued to gain strength and slowly got my appetite back and eventually was able to walk again (after 3 1/2 months!!) With a walker, then a cane. And the plus was that I kept off that weight loss and continued over the next several years to lose 60 more lbs. I had been 80 lbs over weight for years! I still have back problems due to several injuries and surgeries. My question is, what is the difference between morphine and dilaudid and are they related enough that both could cause that? And does it sound like a true allergy or sensitivity to it that could cause it? I always list dilaudid as an allergy on my med records, and list a 'sensitivity' to morphine and codeine.

Interesting to me as my neurosurgeon told me that I had an allergic reaction to morphine while on surgical table for back surgery. He told me to always tell medical persons that I am allergic to morphine. If you would please post any new info you might receive is appreciated.
Hello, Rita! How are you? I'm very sorry about what you went through, that's horrible.
But no, that's not an allergic reaction. As the one nurse told you, those are just side effects, some people experience them more intently than others. The dose may have been too high for you, or it just might not be a medication that works well for you.
The FDA classifies this as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
I've had miserable experiences with some medications, too. However, the signs of an allergic reaction would include itching, hives, facial swelling, throat swelling and trouble breathing.
Fairhope, if the doctor call it an allergic reaction, then it is likely that you experienced one or more of the symptoms I listed above. It could also have caused your blood pressure to fall and your breathing to become labored.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
Can Morphine be combined with Dilaudid for pain control? I took 30 mg of Morphine at 3pm and at 5pm. Pain is worse.
