i was given morphine sulf er but was changed to morphine sulfate ir because i was unable to take it every 12 hours due to me returning to work i did not want to drive on it and it was changed so i could take it when i arrived at work and by the time it was time for the next dose i could wait until i got home so the time frame would not be to off . i was told it was to be taken 4-6 hours but when i got it filled it says 2 times a day. my question is how often is the medication usually taken

Hello, Kat! How are you?

Yes, every 4 to 6 hours is the normal dosing schedule for the regular release formulation or the instant release.

Learn more Morphine details here.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

But, just because it's listed as twice a day on the prescription, that may not necessarily mean you have to take it every 12 hours. Your doctor may just have prescribed it that way to allow you to adjust the schedule according to your needs.

Have you contacted your doctor to ask?
