IR stands for immediate release and ER stands for extended release, so an IR medication is released immediately, as opposed to an ER, which is slowly released over a period of time.
But you shouldn't take either one, unless your doctor has specifically prescribed them for you. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
