Morphine Color Change

I take care of a woman on Hospice and she takes liquid morphine. When I first opened the bottle it was a light blue color, now after a month it has changed to a clear color. Is this possible or normal? Or is someone tampering with it? How can I tell?

Hi Rita,

I don't think morphine is naturally blue, so it seems to me like a dye or food coloring could've been used as a part of the inactive ingredients.

A few things I'd be curious to know about:

- Is there any "settlement" at the bottom of the bottle if you were to shake it up?

- Was the bottle was stored properly, and if not, could sunlight or heat alter its physical properties?

- And lastly, does the woman you take care have anything to say about the color change or the medication not working as well as it should? (Her response may indicate whether there was any tampering involved on her end or via someone she might be living with).

Hope this helps!
