They are both antibiotics, but they do not contain the same active ingredient. Monocef contains Cefpodoxime, and Novamox contains Amoxicillin. You should give him the one the doctor has instructed, because sometimes a specific antibiotic is required to treat certain bacterial infections, according to the NIH.
The U.S. FDA lists the typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.
