Metoprolol Tartrate 50mg

I have been taking metoprolol tartrate 50 mg 2x a day for a while now, my doctor just told me to now start taking 2 tablets in the morning and 1 in the evening. I am concerned that 150 mg per day is too much. Can u tell me if this is not a safe dosage or if its ok to take that much? my blood pressure usually runs around 140/85 to 158/92

Hello, Rhonda! How are you? I understand your concern, that does seem to be a high amount…but it actually isn't for this medication.

Metoprolol can be taken in amounts up to 450mgs a day and it is usually started at the 50mg twice daily dosing, then adjusted until the desired effect is reached, which in your case would be lower blood pressure.

Normal levels are considered 120/80 and generally anything over 130/85 requires treatment. The higher your blood pressure is, the harder your heart has to work and the more pressure is put on blood vessel walls, so the more danger you are in.

If you are still concerned, remember that it is always your right to see another doctor and get a second opinion.
