Metoprolol Is The Same As Amlodipine

My primary care Dr. was giving me Amlodipine for high blood pressure. It was working well along with Lisinopril to keep my blood pressure in check but my legs and ankles began to swell so she took me off of the Amlodipine as leg/ankle swelling are a side effect. Then I was admitted into the hospital and the Dr. there gave me Metoprolol. Now my legs are swelling again and if I am correct in what I am finding Amlodipine and Metoprolol are the same thing?

Hello Anne,

The NIH reports that metoprolol is abeta1-selective(cardioselective) adrenoceptor blocking agent and that amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker.

While both of these medications have different active and inactive ingredients and are different types of blockers they both list ankle swelling as a potential side effect. The reason for this is that they cause the blood vessels to open wider and sometimes fluid will leak out into the muscles and eventually settle in the ankles.

I would advise that you talk to your primary care physician about your concerns with taking blockers as your treatment for high blood pressure. Hopefully there will a better option available that doesn't require you to take a blocker.
