Methimazole Reaction

I have been on methimazole for approx. 4 yrs after being diagnosed w/ graves disease in 2011. My doc wanted me to take nuclear medicine, but i'm avoiding that as I don't want the "pop eyes" etc, along with it. I am on 15 mgs of methimazole down from 20 mgs 2 months ago. For 4 yrs I have gone from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid; back & forth & back & forth; major weight gain- from 120 lbs to 170lbs in 4yrs- cannot seem to lose the weight. Help!!!

Hello, Judi! How are you doing? I'm sorry about the problems you're having.

Methimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism and the FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, skin rash, itching, hair loss, loss of taste and dizziness.

Weight gain is not a listed side effect of this medication, so it is most likely related to the Graves' Disease.
