Iv'e been on methadone 10mg twice a day for two years.Now the methadone is not as effective as was!I take the methadone for chronic lower back pain also taking gabapentin 600mg three times daily.what would be a replacement for methadone?

I was in a car accident several years ago and have degenerative disc disease and bulging discs in my neck and back and always in a lot of pain. I'm 40 years old and not able to live my life hardly at all due to the pain. I have been on methadone before and it seems to be the only thing to help me live a normal life. I am in search of a good doctor that can help me so I can live a much more normal life without constant pain all hours of the day and night. It's hard for me to even get out of bed to make breakfast for my children because of the overwhelming pain and stiffness in my neck and lower back. My quality of life is going down and making me very depressed. I don't want to be on a pain medication that you must take several times a day because it's not good for the liver. That's why I prefer methadone, that you only need to take 3 to 4 times a day.

If you want to go by my last PM doctor 40mg is the maximum for pain, so you are already over the dose he would give. Do you have anything for breakthrough pain? If not, I can tell you that the clinics that treat persons for addiction give a 1x a day dose and raise it until you are good (usually around 160-180mg or so they get, every 24 hours).
