I started taking methadone in 2004 and kept on it until sep 2007. during that time I went from 125 pounds to 200 pounds!! After quit taking it I started loosing weight and after 3 months I was down to 150 pounds and two more months I was able to fit into 30" waist jeans again, by 2009 I was wearing 28" waist jeans. I has another car accident and started taking methadone again and it has greatly improved my quality of life! ! With out it I have chronic pain ! The only set back from taking it is I've gained almost all the weight back!! Grrrrr!! I am up to 184# and I have taken steps to combat the weight gain, I cut out all sugar, no Carbs after 12 noon and every time I want to eat I eat a grapefruit because of the full feeling it gives you. Do you know of any other methods to combat this problem? ? I have to remain on the methadone but the weight gain has caused me to have high blood pressure! ! And now I have to take medication Dailey! ! The weight makes me misserable!! Please help! !

i have taken methadone for 3 months probably for chronic pain and now am cutting back to get off. the weight I gained was water weight, and my doctor had to put me on diuretics. I was grateful for the pain relief. but I can't wait to get off this medicine. I'm just hoping to be able to do it without withdrawel.
Hello, Delane! How are you? I am so sorry about the weight gain issues that you're having.
However, it is a very frequent issue for people taking narcotics, usually due to the fact that the medications slow your metabolism, plus their pain causes them to be more sedentary. Really, the most vital thing to keeping weight under control and losing weight is activity and most people in pain aren't very active.
Have you consulted your doctor for further assistance?
Additionally, if your diet is that unbalanced, you might actually be contributing to the problem. Many don't realize it, but those extreme diets cause your metabolism to slow even more, it's your body's way of trying to protect itself.
