MY HUSBAND HAS BLADDER CANCER AND WAS PRESCRIBED 20 MG OF METHADONE EVERY MORNING. HE WAS ALSO GIVEN MORPHIN SULFATE 60 MGS TWICE A DAY. HOW SHOULD THESE MEDICINES BE TAKEN?

Hi Debra, I am sorry to hear of your husbands cancer. As far as the doctor mixing Methadone and Morphine, more and more doctors are doing this. Methadone and Morphine potentate each other. What doctors consider one of the most important aspects of administering the two together is that for some reason it reduces the tolerance level of the opioid. That should explain some of the questions you have. I myself have had surgery and the administration of both drugs made my recovery go smoothly and I had no withdrawals. I hope this helps. Oh by the way, I am also a doctor, and you really should not listen to every one who claims to know everything simply because they have used drugs, or read a PDR, or the FDA Prescription requirments of some opiates. Advice would be " Get surgery" before you have Kidney or Liver failure!! These doctors are not to bright sometimes

My wife got off it. Besides sneezing ive gotten down to 5mg and wasn't sick. Coming off 30s oxy, that was a horrible experience and that wasnt even a full two days. Methadone helps control it in so many ways. The benefit outweighs the bad sides of it. But remember keep doses low, there's no need to go over 40mg in my opinion. There's more to my story on how it helped other people too.

I use to take oxy 30s 10 a day until i got tired or running out and being scared of withdrawls.a year and a half ago my doc put me on methadone 2x2 a day i stuck with 2 only a day and got my life back try to stay on low doses and doc gave me 2 oxy 15 a dau for breakthru.i never hav gptten sick like coming off oxys like ive done before and ive gone 3 days without anything and only gotten hot flashes and some sweating but its nothing like oxy withdrawls.on my next vacation im gonna go down to 1 a day and try to keep going lower my buddy got off it from clinic after he got to 5 mgs a day.but i think if i had strong support i could quit everything but too scared to try longer since i work and support 5 kids and a wife.i got started on pills cuz of back injury at work.

He can do it cuz thats what my friend said just discormfort hot and cold flashes beat the hell out of full withdrawls.ive done it from 4 a day to 2 a day last year and this year going to one a day.u just need to keep going slow.goodluck

It takes hours and certain doses to counter the withdrawls.for me it took 4 within 6 hours to not fel sick off oxys then took two every 12 hours

You all just need to smoke a J.. Its fast, effective, perfectly harmless, and a natural pain reliever.. And the best part there is no withdrawl! It even cures panic attacks.. Just because someone is or claims to be a doctor does not mean they have your best interest at heart.. On the contrary 9/10 it is probably there pockets.. Hell even the Nazi's had doctors.. They invented methadone! But I dont mean to rant I'm just tired of seeing people die everyday.. If they are not dead their life and every second of it is consumed by this B.S. #THETRUTH

Well my mom passed away this morning we don't know the cause of death but she was taking methadone and morphine stay away from that stuff it is a toxic cocktail that kills I really think this is was happen to my loving mother I found her this morning not a pretty sight damn man she is gone now my advice stay away from it rip mom I love and miss you may 13 2014 although I don't know this was the cause of death my heart tells me that those damn pills had somthing to do with it

Methadone is long lasting, takes up to 60 hrs for first dose to leave and every time u take it, it adds on top of the previous dose...the pain clinic is taking us off methadone and giving us morphine 15mg er 3x a day plus percocet we use to get 4 x 10mgs a day of methadone and 2 x 15 mgs of oxycodone. now my wife is 1 month off methadone and replace with the morphine was a little tough at first she sneezed alot but got thru fine im on 3 x 10mgs of methadone and 2 x 15 and just got next script 3 x 5mgs methadone for ween and 2 x 10mgs of oxy...i work so its a little harder for me but this ween down works for methadone if anyone is interested in asking ur docs.

Do what I did. Get rid of the methadone and go.on lyrica.. Methadone controls ur life and withdrawals are the worst of them all..20 days and still suffering.

VERY RARE & IM ONLY 42! I ALSO AMA PHARM M.D., WHICH BASICALLY CAN DO MOSTLY EVERYTHING A DR. CAN, EXCEPT WRITE SCHEDULE 2 MEDS!

AS FAR AS YOUR HUSBAND, HOPING HE IS HEALTHY AS AN OX IN 2016? I actually was on a VERY SIMILAR REGIMENT. I TOOK A CERTAIN DOSE OF METHADONE ALONG WITH 3 OTHER MUCH STRONGER OPIATE'S! I SERIOUSLY needed that kind of PAIN CONTROL & THIS WAS ABOUT 6 WEEKS AFTER 1 OF MY 16 hr Surgery marathons! THANK GOD FOR BEING KNOCKED OUT & NOT KNOWING THE OUTCOME.

Thank you, that was the smartest answer about methadone that I've ever read. You're right, it's not a blocker and I don't know how many times I've read someone mistakenly say it is and give someone else the wrong information. They do compliment each other and work pretty damn well together.

I have been on prescribed doses of Methadone and Morphine Sulfate IR since 2002 for intractable pain due to idiopathic adolescent severe scoliosis and kyphosis plus several spinal injuries. I am 67 yrs old and will finally have surgery next month. This involves replacing all discs (bulging, herniated or torn), stabilizing 4 fractured vertebrae and fusing in 3 sections all vertebrae from C2 to S1 using a paste grown from my own bone cells & temporarily using rods and screws until the fusion "takes". I have no other health issues except mild osteopenia. It is a 3 day surgery & will stop my forward 90 degree bend from compressing my internal organs and the numbness/pain in my back and limbs. Methadone (and morphine) have saved my life and enabled me to walk (w/rollator) 3X a day with my dog to stay mobile. The stigma placed on Methadone is undeserved. I have used from my current 40mg/day to 90/mg a day as my long acting pain med, and Morphine Sulfate IR 15 mg as my breakthrough med, from current 60mg/day to 120 mg after spine trauma or accident injuries. Methadone is extremely long acting, up to 24 hrs. Which is why those withdrawing from opiates are dosed once a day. All opiates can cause constipation which is why my Dr. Has me take a stool softener and drink lots of water/fluids. The only other medications I take are 400mg ibuprofen 3X day for inflammation and 1 OTC Prilosec. Neither pain med makes me nauseous, and I have been on everything in the book; some tore up my stomach, like hydrocodones or oxycodones. Others like Fentanyl/Actique put me in lala land. And yes, at my higher doses my meds did make me drowsy, but I needed the sleep to heal. Thank you for listening.

I'm on Methadone and other meds for 25 back surgeries. You have to be VERY CAREFUL WITH METHADONE. It builds up in your blood stream and yes it can stop your heart. It takes quite some time to recover from back surgery. I hope you feel better soon. Just let me know if I can help.

Congrats, anyone that can withdraw from something as potent as methadone in an outpatient setting truly deserves the admiration of all who have struggled with this gorilla. I'm glad you prefaced your post as in your personal opinion that Neurontin was effective for your withdrawal. You are one of the fortunate ones. As a long term MMT Client working in this field my experience is that few receive measurable relief from Neurontin alone. When used in conjunction with other class drugs it shows more promise. Individuals vary as to what and how much will aide in this transition.

TO ALL CONTEMPLATING A WITHDRAWAL FROM METHADONE I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE SINCE THIS PROCESS CAN CREATE LIFE THREATENING COMPLICATIONS. Especially for those with underlying medical conditions. Recovery is possible but this challenge requires years of intense aftercare to establish an environment conducive to an opiate free life. Finally after 4 years i quit methadone got to 2.5mg a day to 2.5mg 3 days and now done only thing is a little bit of restless stomach and leg syndrome but very little...you can read my post thruout the years on here.good luck and godbless everyone.but if anyone takes opiates oxys norcos etc very little methadone will keep you on check from abusing other opiates ask your doctor because without it i was always sick next day either taking as perscribed or having to take more.

I was in a situation recently where my Clinic wasnt open one Saturday because of weather and went too the hospital and they prescribed 60mg er every 12 hours along with clonidine and it seemed to work fine. Didn't feel perfect but wasn't sick or unable to function.
