Metformin Hot Flashes

I started using metformin last year due to PCOS, I became insulin resistant. Hot flashes, nausea, headaches, diarrhea(if I eat the wrong things) and sleepiness at times have been the side effects that I've experienced. I take 500 mg daily and I would hate to stop taking them because they have assisted in helping me manage my weight. I was wearing anywhere between a size 6 and 8 before I became insulin resistant but when I began to gain weight I went up to a size 14 and exercise/healthy eating was helping very little. Since I've been on the metformin I have dropped down to a size 10 and of course it takes consistently working hard at it and eating right. Are there other alternatives to keep the insulin levels in control so that I can continue to lose weight if I stop taking the metformin? I'm really tired of the hot flashes, I'm only 37. I think I could stand to wait in those.

Metformin has been known to cause hot flashes in some women that take it, but with the PCOS and your being over 35, that may not be the sole reason, it could be just due to hormones, in general. Usually, women with PCOS are low in Progesterone and high in estrogen, due the not ovulating and elevated estrogen can cause hot flashes, as well.

Then, once a woman passes 35, anovulatory cycles usually start in the perimenopause phase and that can also cause hot flashes. Many woman think that such things don't start until she's 50 or so, but that's not true, it can start as young as 35.

What you need to is consult your doctor, so they can do some checking to determine exactly what's causing them.

Is there anything else I can help with?
