Hi Guzman,

To answer your question Metformin HCL stands for "Hydrochloride", which from what I could gather, is used as a base to make the pills water-soluble.

I haven't come across any specific details on what "HER" would stand for after the drug name. Are you sure it doesn't just say "ER" for extended release?

Other than the obvious difference in the dosage you mentioned, the presence of Hydrochloride appears to be the primary difference between the two tablets. Outside of that, there might also be a different set of inactive ingredients (binders/fillers) used. Although, one would have to look up the pill ID in order to get more information on that.
