I am 67 and had light spotting a couple of times so went to doctor for check up. All was normal. He prescribed the medroxypr PC 10 mg tab for 14 days and when I stop it let him know if it makes me start me start a period. Reading all the notes - why would he me something to make me start - He said it would stop me from spotting. At this point I've been having a period for about 10 days (fairly heavy) with no signs of stopping. Will this finally stop on its own?

Hello, Nett! How are you?

Sometimes, even once past menopause, the estrogen in your body still causes the uterine lining to build up and that can result in some irregular bleeding or spotting. The hormone in this medication is a progesterone and it's that one that usually helps balance the estrogen, to turn your periods off an on. We usually produce a bolus of it at the beginning of our cycle, then at ovulation… and when it drops off, if an egg isn't fertilized, it causes our periods to start.

Since you're no longer ovulating, once you're postmenopausal, the lining may build up for years, then when your hormones change, again, you can experience bleeding like this, as your body tries to shed it just like it used to and, it may also occur as your estrogen levels fall more with age.

Given that nothing else was found to be causing it, most doctors will have you try taking this for awhile, to see if a full period can be induced to clean out all of that built up uterine lining and, if it works, the bleeding should stop and not occur, again.

This frequently happens to many women that are postmenopausal.

If the bleeding doesn't stop a week to 10 days, after you finish taking it, they may need to do a manual womb scrub, where they actually go in and scrape off the lining.

You can read all the details on this on the pages provided by the NIH.

The FDA lists the other typical side effects of this medication as possibly including headache, irritability and PMS-like symptoms.

Is there anything else I can help with?
