Medication Side Effects Lost All Energy Unable To Function
UpdatedI am 64 year old RN, who until 10/28/15, was working full time with only mild HTN. Started having severe sternum pain at work, drove self to ER and ended up having emergency surgery for a thoracic aneurysm. After lying on my back for over 12 hours, all of lower lumbar discs were bulging and the back pain was the worse I have ever experienced. After 5 days in icu, 2 episodes of A-FIB, was D/C home and advised to see a back doctor recommended by the hospital doctor. I was home, unable to lay, sit, stand, a barely walk.... Got in and he recommended 3 steroid epidural shots, Couldn't do the first until I had been off the baby Aspirin for a week. Mind you , during this period my only relief was to completely knock myself out with narcotics. And I was also so dizzy and nauseated that I have now lost 35 pounds since 10/28/15. I look like walking death. I had one day in the ER, screaming with pain... At least that Doctor didn't think I was " med seeking". And gave me enough dilaudid that I had about 6 hours of rest. The next week ended up in ambulance with another bout of A-FIB. Another 4 days in Icu. Got first epidural. Finally some back relief. But I am holding onto walls, vomit if eat anything, zero strength. Next is the cardiologist. Pulse is too high, b/ p not great, but ekg is ok. He ups the lopressor that I was originally sent home on. I also have been on 20mg of lisinopril for many years with no problems. Ordered carotid Doppler- normal. However at his office yesterday, the dizziness got me and I passed out cold. He said stop the loprssor. Went today for nuclear stress evaluation. Do not know the results. But, suddenly the dizziness is fading and I ate some soup for the first time tonight that I did not throw up. Oh, forgot one thing. Week before last, other than the dizziness, I thought I might be improving.....not. Suddenly, 10 weeks from original surgery, I started bleeding at the femoral site of first surgery. Back to icu, surgery to fix a pseudoaneurysm. Incision with 22 staples. Doctor had never seen this happen so long after surgery. I guess I need to get this horror story off my chest. I cry for no reason. I am going to attempt to return to work this Monday. Second epidural in the AM, and the third is scheduled for 12/30. My job is mostly desk work.... I am just afraid that I am going to be a blithering i****. The lopressor had to be causing the dizziness and nausea. I am someone who was high energy, did all my gardening, housework, loved playing with my 2 grandsons, and is no where ready to retire. How do I control my emotions and will this healthcare he'll ever end? No Christmas for us this year. I simply have not felt capable of doing any of it. Thanks for listening and please give me a lot of advice.

Hello, Margee! How are you doing? I'm so very sorry about everything you've been through. I wish I could give you a hug!
Yes, the Lopressor could have caused those symptoms, they are known side effects of it, as listed by the FDA. It may also cause headache, increased urination and hypotension. I had a lot of problems myself, when I tried it and had to stop taking it.
Things should settle down, once your body gets to your no longer taking it, but it may take a couple weeks.
Are you still on any other medications? The emotional issues can sometimes be caused by narcotics, since they act as depressants.
There's also a chance that you could be depressed over this whole adventure.
