It actually depends on the type of test being done. There are some that just test for the general presence of narcotics and are do not go in depth to differentiate between them.
However, many tests are more precise and can detect the exact drugs being used by the metabolites. This is especially true if it is a doctor's test, who is checking to see if they are using their prescribed medications or any illicit drugs.
Most employers, however, just check for the presence of certain substances, though they can easily take the test further, if they deem it necessary and worth the expense.
