Lower Medication Requirement

I have been taking Levothyroxine for many years. I was at 50, then after a few years I moved to 75 and then to 88. Now, after a few years at 88, my doctor says I am tkaing too much and should lower to 75. Is this normal?

While I'm not familiar with any documented cases of an acquired tolerance to thyroid replacement therapy, I do think that if you are taking a lot of it, your doctor probably just wants to see if a lesser amount would get the job done just as efficiently as the higher dose would (if in fact it was being taken in excess amounts).

I would think this is normal of doctors to take this kind of action in situations where no one is completely sure of what an ideal dosage would be. If you honestly feel fine taking that dose, then by all means I would go with whatever your gut tells you.
