Am 70 years age..difficulty sleeping. Have prescription Zolpidim 10MG. Using half tablet with 3 MG Melatonin, or 5 MG Melatonin. Also have prescription Trazidone 50 MG. Doctor says machine is better but it just doesn't help with sleep at all. It physically safe to take Melatonin with Zolpidim nightly? For how how long?Is Trazidone worth taking at all? Dr says it prevents worrying about grown up children.Thanks..With no Melatonin, I take one tablet Zolpidim.

Hi, Foster! How are you?

Trazodone is an SARI antidepressant that has been getting much more use as a sleep aid.

Learn more Trazodone details here.

I'll be completely honest with you and tell that the main problem with it, other SARIs and SSRI antidepressants being used for insomnia issues, is that while they can cause drowsiness as a side effect, so you fall asleep, they sometimes tend to mess with your REM sleep. They cause a REM latency, so it occurs later than normal and doesn't last as long. Thus, you may sleep a good 8 to 10 hours, when you take them, but you may not actually feel rested, when you awake.

Zolpidem is usually only for short-term use and it tends to cause next day hangover like effects in some people that take it, along with the risks of hallucinations, sleep eating and other sleep actions.

Melatonin is actually a hormone, though it is available over the counter. It's only been shown to be effective at up to 3mgs, so really you waste your money buying any doses higher than that.

It doesn't actually do anything to help you fall asleep or stay asleep, but what it does do is help to rebalance your internal body clock. Thus, for most people, it's not something they need forever, it can be used for a few months, until they reach a more normal sleep pattern, then discontinued.

What machine are you talking about, a CPAP?
