Unless your doctor specifics otherwise, what that means is that you just don't have to take any pills those days, since there are no active ingredients in them. You just wouldn't take any those days, then start a new pack after those days pass. And yes, you continue onto the new pack, whether you get your period, or not.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of oral contraceptives as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, breakthrough bleeding and PMS-like symptoms.
