Levothyroxine And Itchy Groin
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I started on Levothyroxine about a month ago, 50 mg, but got severe headaches, so dropped the dose to 25 mg. I still feel exhausted but the headaches have nearly gone, but there is another very uncomfortable problem. I have severe itching in my nether regions, so bad that it is interfering with my life. I stopped taking the meds over the weekend, and the itching stopped. Now I am back on it, and the itching has returned, so it's definitely the Levo that's causing it. I have no transmitted diseases, no candida, no other reason for it. Will this fade in time, or do I have to accept that while I'm on thyroid meds, I will itch? It's awful...

Thank you soo much! My doc didn't laugh, she was great, although she hadn't heard of the itch as a side effect, and she ordered more blood tests to see if my pituitary is maybe malfunctioning, in which case she will send me to an endocrinologist. She also treated me for thrush but it didn't make any difference. Well, it did for a day. But the itch is back. I also tried stopping the levo and the itch disappeared but I felt too exhausted. So now I'm on a dose that's halfway between no itch plus exhaustion, or terrible itch with energy. So I have a bit of energy, and a bit of an itch! :-)

I hate meds, and am hating getting older and all the nasty ailments that start afflicting one.

I have the 'itchy groin' too. Doctor just laughed (seriously, he did) I have recently changed my cholesterol tablets to another brand (I have Under active Thyr' and high Chol') and reduced the thyroxine tablets from 75 to 50 and the problem vanished. So did the muscle ache, day and night, most of the lethargy feelings and my energy seems to be up too. Maybe not much help but at least you know you are not alone!

Hello, Cantsit! What a horrible problem to have! I understand why you're upset.

This isn't one that's been mentioned, so far, by others that have been taking this medication.

Have you consulted your doctor about the problem?

Learn more Levothyroxine details here.

This medication can be very pesky in that its side effects usually persist and don't taper off, like other drugs.
