Lasting Trileptal Side Effects

I started trileptal at 16 or 17 years old, took it for about 5 years, and have been off of any psychiatric meds for about 4 or 5 years now. I developed a slight tick that doesn't interfere with my day to day, but I notice it. People close to me have never pointed it out, so I don't think it's obvious, but sometimes I have to try twice to pick something up because my finger or neck/head twitches. Should I expect this to be permanent? I know it's on the list of side effects for trileptal. Could it be degenerative?

Hi Mia,

Sorry to hear about your experience with Trileptal. I find it unusual that symptoms would linger for so long even after stopping the medication. In most cases I've been aware of, one should expect adverse effects to subside after discontinuing the cause of it (i.e. Trileptal) - But can we be so sure that Trileptal really is the cause (if you're not taking it)?

I understand you said that you've been off psychiatric meds for about 4 or 5 years..but does that include anticonvulsant drugs such as Trileptal? How long have you been off this specific med for? Perhaps being on this medication for 5 years may be why it's taking such a long time for your body to eliminate it?

And while there is no reliable way to determine how long symptoms might last for, I would still be optimistic, in that our bodies go through different cycles as we age. I'd even go so far as to check your nutrient levels via blood work - this way you can supplement any possible vitamin or mineral deficiencies which may be attributing to the twitches (e.g. magnesium, b-vitamins, potassium, etc). Warning labels don't always mention this, but certain medications have been known to deplete vital nutrients and electrolytes over time, so that's just something else to be aware of.

I hope this helps!
