Hi, I have tapered my fentanyl from 70mcg to 12mcg in the past 10 months. I was placed on fentanyl after an emergency spinal surgery. (Successful surgery x2 85%). After second surgery in as many months post anesthetic complication toxicology liver septicemia. CCU d/c 4-5 min result full retrieval. I have been acutely ill while reducing fentanyl and body physically unable to endure further withdrawals. cardiac issues and depressive episodes including suicide ideation. The pain consultant has recommended Ketamine In fusion in hospital 4 hrs to ease this final step. He is positive I have reservations as my system is hypersensitive. I was advised not to have another full general anesthetic for several years after the event 10 months previous. Has anyone else been in this or a similar situation? If so, your advice and recall of experience would greatly be appreciated. Thanking you. Regards, Georgie in Australia.

Since My post. there has been NO response. It has been requested by the moderator to supply more details. It has now come to my attention that here in Australia we use Ketamine in a different format than in other countries. Australia is very cautious and a lot of research is being done still. The use of Ketamine infusion here is not only for pain we are using the infusion side effects to jump of the opioid morphine. Also to "reset receptors" in the brains neurological pathways in the brain to reduce "pain". this is done in a hospital specialist unit environment. After the receptors have been exposed to so much neuro pain they are can become always "switched on" much like a fire alarm. requiring more analgesia. not to be confused with opioid withdrawal pain.
My pain specialist has now accessed my previous anaesthetic records and rescheduled my admission so he can be present at the procedure should any unforseen complication arise. Ketamine is used in anaesthetics this is as a precaution. The procedure is scheduled for mid June. I will update.
*It would be a bonus if my major reactive depression reacted in a positive manner as the side effect.*
Kind Regards G
