Its All New To Me

this is the first time i take any type of bc. i began to take it on the sunday after my period, because that is when my doc told me to. did i do the correct thing by listening to her and taking it on the sunday after my period or should i have waited to begin taking my 1st pill ever in my life on the day of my period.

There is really no right or wrong on this, so you did the right thing by following your doctor's instructions.

The only difference is, if you start immediately, on the first day of your period, then you are immediately protected, from pregnancy, because it will prevent ovulation from occurring.

However, if you don't start until your period has already finished, there is a chance that ovulation has already started. (It usually occurs about 2 days before or 2 days after your menstrual cycle.) This means that it is not safe to have unprotected sex for at least the first 7 days, so you should use a back up method of birth control, such as condoms or contraceptive sponges.
