Atarax contains the active ingredient Hydroxyzine, this is an antihistamine, used to treat allergic reactions and sometimes insomnia.

As to the dosing, it really needs to be calibrated according to your child's age, weight, other medical conditions, other medications they may be on and etc. Therefore it should not be given unless prescribed by your doctor and following their exact instructions.
