Yes, they are both classified by the FDA as anticonvulsants, though the Topiramate usually treats more types of seizures than the Gabapentin and the latter is also more commonly used to treat certain types of nerve pain and mood disorders.

Typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes.
