There are actually several products available over the counter that can treat the pain of UTIs, as long as your doctor says it is safe for you to take one.
The most common one used is Azo. It contains Phenazopyridine, which is the same as what doctors prescribe. The FDA lists its possible side effects as including nausea, headache and discolored urine.
The side effects for Bactrim may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
