Yes, Ultram is classified as a mild opioid, so it does require a prescription and, in lines with that, no there is nothing available over the counter that is as effective.
The FDA warns that Ultram carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.
