Is Percocet Stronger Than Hydrocodone (Top voted first)

Updated

I take Lortab 10's, Fentanyl 100mg patch every 3 days and Ibuprofen. I stay in constant pain and wanted to know what I could switch to that would be stronger and help with my constant pain. I've been on all 3 medicines and alot of other medicine (not pain medicine) for over 3yrs.

First I would like to say great description and good advice for the user's question in regard to Percocet strength comparison to hydrocodone. In addition, since I worked in the medical field several years ago, I do know that Ibuprofen is not part of the "equation" (as I'll put it) :-) in the "chemical formula" of Percocet. Percocet actually contains Acetaminophen and Oxycodone, not Ibuprofen and Oxycodone. For example, if a doctor were to prescribe Percocet to a patient and the pills were imprinted with WATSON 932, this factual example would be the following strength. 325 mg / 10 mg. Basically this is the Drug Class: Narcotic analgesic combinations. I didn't reply to your post to argue or imply you were wrong about the combinations in Percocet simply because I and many others appreciate your encouraging words to the "asker". As a viewer of these question posts, replies, comments, etc., I thought I would clarify this answer for both you and the poster who asked which prescription was stronger. Hope this helps and good luck to all with medication problems and/or confusions. In conclusion (this applies to all who read these types of messages), PLEASE be CAREFUL and MONITOR your daily dosage, do not take more than prescribed as it will lead to horrible side effects, increased craving of the medication, and a highly increased tolerance to the prescription (THE LONGER YOU TAKE IT, THE MORE DOSAGE AMOUNT YOU NEED TO GET THAT RELIEF & EFFECT YOU NEEDED WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY PRESCRIBED- **Leading to a vicious and battling cycle*. One thing is for sure and we can all probably agree... I certainly hope the doctor(s) monitor that as well as how long patient(s) have been taking ANY addictive medication but unfortunately, there are too many doctors out there that do not and will write just about any prescription for their patient. As long as a doctor gets paid, whether it's with insurance or without, their wallets and bank accounts are full, while patients are becoming more physically and emotionally dependent on the drug. However, there are many doctors that go by the rules (FDA, etc.) and take quality care of their patients- that is most important. :)

Sounds like your doctor is trying to give you as little pain relief as possible--none of what you're taking is particularly strong or effective. Percocet would definitely be better; it's a combination of oxycodone and ibuprofen. The ibuprofen is supposed to boost the effect of the oxycodone; you can also get plain oxycodone since the ibuprofen is more damaging to your body (liver) than the oxycodone. If you don't mind sharing--what condition is causing you so much pain? Is it something chronic, with little hope of recovery or something temporary? I'm asking because, if it's pain that will likely not ever go away, your doctor should prescribe whatever you need, even if it's a narcotic that's considerably stronger. Also remember that not every pain medication works the same for everyone and the same medication or dosage may work for one person but not another, at least not as well. I'm telling you this as someone who has lived with severe, incurable chronic pain for over 20 years and my experience with doctors in 3 states (!) has been that many doctors will insist that: 1) your pain can't possibly be as bad as you say it is and, 2) the particular pain med that is their favorite one for a particular condition SHOULD be working for you. And if it SHOULD be working, then it MUST be working and you don't know what you're talking about and, in fact, you're probably just trying to get "high". They will insist on hanging on to this idea in spite of the fact that you've come back to them in agony and in tears. If you have someone close who can go with you to your doctor to vouch for the fact that you're NOT exaggerating the severity and/or debilitating nature of your pain, bring them with you and let them do some speaking for you. Often when you're in severe pain, you're not the strongest or the most coherent! In any case, it's good to have a witness to whatever the doctor tells you because many doctors can be arrogant to the point of being abusive. Keep reminding yourself that it is ethically, morally and professionally unacceptable for a doctor to ignore the need for relief from chronic pain, especially when it's severe.

Hi Cynthia,
Acetaminophen is what causes liver damage and as far as Ibuprofen, it can cause gastrointestinal issues such as inner bleeding of the stomach, etc., not liver damage though. Now, don't get me wrong; taking too much Ibuprofen over a long period of time, like twenty years or so, can be just as bad as the harmful affects of acetaminophen. Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is the cause of liver damage and/or failure, or too much Acetaminophen shall I confirm. Percocet doesn't have Ibuprofen in it and that is the danger, because of the acetaminophen it contains. Although there are many different milligram forms of Percocet, meaning some may have less Tylenol or Acetaminophen, that helps reduce the risk of liver problems.

I am not a MD, just a person that has dealt with pain and pain meds for 23 years. I see all these messages of people trying to figure out what pill is stronger than another. What I have found to be true is that it is an individual subject. It might well not be the stronger pill being you need. Some of the less potent pills like muscle relaxers and meds like sertraline can't help with the pain. It's about working close with you pain management doctor. It's about allowing the meds to work for several weeks before you change meds. It's about keeping a open, ongoing, honest conversation with your doctor. Keeping in mind that not ALL doctors are willing to prescribe ALL meds. The best situation for all is to build a long term relationship with your doctor and follow ALL their rules.

hello.. i was thinking the same thing when i read the post.. percocet contains tylenol and perodan contains aspirin.. i have been on pain pills for almost 20 years and have been somewhat of an amazing tolerance to both hydro and percocet.. my question is... is there any pain pill stronger than those 2 without the tylenol in it "since the tylenol is so bad for my liver" that is weaker then morphine? thanks if anyone knows anything

Have your doctor try you on Tramadol 50mg 3 times per day with a Tylenol 500mg. I have chronic pain that is constant and it puts a stop to it for 6-7 hours each time I take it. Tramadol alone does not work for me, I have to take it with Tylenol. My doctor prescribed for three times a day for consistency.

Have you tried methadone? Its a strong and one of the cleanest purest of opiates you can take. It is very habit forming though, so be aware. Its also very cheap to fill. But if you ever want to come off of it its one of the hardest things to come off of as far as withdrawal! But if you're going to be on pain meds the rest of your life I would def try it for your pain.. It should be very helpful!

I've been on pain pills for over 20 years and in the last 3 years my pm doctor put me on Methadone 20mg 3xdaily with percocet 10/325 as needed for bt. Wow I have finally got my pain under wraps...I had 2 major surgeries and I didn't have any problems keeping my pain under control. Talk to your Doctor and ask about Methadone, it is a wonderful drug.. You might have to start low and work up to what works for you, but sooo worth it.. I think 60mgs a day is the highest you can go, but I'm telling you that this drug is the best..I'm getting ready for another surgery and for the first time in for ever I'm not worried about controlling my pain..

A big difference in the combination of ibuprofen vs acetaminophen in any narcotic, whether it is hydrocodone or oxycodone is the fact that acetamenophen is NOT an NSAID:
(non steroid antiinflamatory drug), but ibuprophen IS. I have severe crippling rheumatoid arthritis, which is systemic, causing chronic severe pain with inflamation. I have to take prednisone and should therefore be cautious taking any NSAIDS. . without prednisone, I would not get the pain relief of my hydrocodone (10-325 tab 4Xday). . I was prescribed 6xday. . But government now regulates, & the max allowed to be prescribed is 40mg/day. Since the panic about opioids, I am so very fearful that "They" . .the government, will make it that only terminal cancer patients will be prescribed narcotics for Chronic pain. I do not get "high", I do NOT abuse them. . I cannot function at ALL without them, & PLEASE do not tell me to take a hot shower, an aspirin or ibuprofen and go to my happy place!! My disease is not "just arthritis" There ARE people who have a legit need for narcotic pain meds. As it is, I now have to jump thru hoops to get an Rx each month, I have taken hydrcodone for 14yrs. . I am TIRED of being treated like a "drug addict" , instead of a patient

Yes, it only takes 6.67mgs of Oxycodone to equal each 10mgs of Hydrocodone, so the Percocet would be stronger.

Learn more Percocet details here.

Oxycodone is also available by itself, without the Acetaminophen, in a regular release formulation, so you also may want to ask your doctor about that.

It is another narcotic opiate, so it also has the potential to be habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
