Hello, Troy! How are you and the pup?
Yes, it is safe to use in dogs and is prescribed to them for UTIs, as well.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe for your pup. If they have any type of problem with kidney function, or a kidney disease, they can't take it. Thus, it would be best to consult with your vet, first, to be safe.
The FDA classifies this medication as an antibiotic and lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Thank you so much for your reply. After searching several other sites, along with this one, I decided to give my puppy just a small dose of macrobid, along with some cranberry relief chewies I found at the pet food store. Within the first day, I saw a very good improvement--she was no longer squatting over and over with nothing coming out. She now has a good stream of urine coming out and isn't trying over and over. Thank God, because we really couldn't afford a $400 trip to the ER vet, although I would have done it if I did not see an improvement in her within a short timeframe. Thanks again, I appreciate your advice!!
how did you give a smaller does I'm having the same issue. but not sure how to spit up the capsule?
It is very dangerous to give animals medicines meant for humans. They metabolize medicines differently and will be ineffective if the correct dosages are not administered in a timely way over a certain course of time. I work in a Vet.'s office and Macrobid isn't something I recall given to an animal. You can actually hurt your animal, or worse. Find a daytime Vet. and pay the for the visit and proper antibiotics. If you cannot do this you shouldn't own a pet. You own that dog or cat the care that it deserves. UTI's can soon cause kidney infections and that can kill a dog or a cat in brief time. Don't take the chance.
Macrobid/macrodantin IS used in dogs, Bebe. 2 mg/lb. 2-3 times daily.
Re: Bebe Labeau (# 4)
To the person working in the vet office....Jerk! This person was looking for some help. Money is hard to come by in this day and time. I'm sure she is a good pet parent but we are all looking for cheapest way to take care of our four legged friends!the medications given in the vet office are frequently the same given to humans but through different distribution.
Re: Bebe Labeau (# 4)
Don’t be so high and mighty.
If this person was suffering unemployment and had to give the dog up cuz they couldn’t afford it, you would complain about that too. You aren’t the judge and jury of who should own a dog. Maybe, if you think like this, you shouldn’t work with people and pets. You lack compassion and empathy.
People are doing their best out here - stop being a judgmental f***!
