Is It Safe To Take Aciphex With Dexilant

I have been on Aciphex which was a miracle drug for me for 10 years. One pill daily controlled my GERD completely and I was able to eat normally and enjoy my life. For some reason I don't understand, I had a horrible breakthrough of GERD last Saturday night which felt like someone poured battery acid down my throat. It woke me at 2 AM and I was scared because I never had that type of reflux before. I had an endoscopy two years ago that was pretty normal. Since this happened on a weekend, I just started taking my Aciphex twice a day, once in am and once in pm and it seemed to help somewhat...not perfect, but better than it was. I finally got through to my GI doc on Tuesday and he switched me to Dexilant, 60mg once a day and 300mg generic Zantac at night. This is my fourth day and this does not seem to be helping. Still have a slight burning in my esophagus, belching all the time, some of the belches are still acid-belches and I sleep, but it takes awhile for me to feel good enough to lay down. Still feel like I need to clear my throat constantly and have a slight tickle cough on and off. I have been careful with my diet, but I am frustrated and want to go back to my Aciphex. Is it okay to continue on Aciphex twice a day? Or what about Dexilant in AM and Aciphex in PM? Is it okay to combine these two drugs? I am leaving for vacation on Tuesday and do not wish to be miserable on my trip and afraid to eat anything which will completely ruin the trip. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

They are both PPI medications, just different ones, but they are used to treat the same things, so unless your doctor says otherwise, there should not be an issue with your switching back to the one that works best for you.

The Zantac may also work better if you split it up and take half that in the morning and at night, but once again, you should double check to make sure that it's safe for you to do so.

The main issue, however, with such prolonged use of the PPIs, such as your taking the Aciphex for 10 years, is that they increase the risk of hip fractures with long-term use.

Did you eat anything different that night that may have caused this flare up? Did you have any alcoholic drinks?
