Is It Safe To Skip Sugar Pills To Avoid Period For 1 Month

I'm going on a cruise in March . I'm supposed to be on my period during that rime. I was told to skip the sugar pills and start a new pack and I won't have a period that month. Is this safe for a 44 year old?

Hello, Sheila! How are you?

As long as your doctor approves, there's no harm in it. But there are no guarantees that it will work, you may still experience your period, or some spotting.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of oral contraceptives as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability and PMS like symptoms.

It's actually a bigger concern that you're still taking them in your 40's, because that's very unusual. Most doctors won't prescribe them for women past age 40, due to the increased risk they cause of blood clots.

Is your doctor monitoring you regularly?
