Is 15 Mg Morphine Stronger Than Oxycodone (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy pain specialist had me on 40 mg Opana ER and 15 mg Morphine Sulfate IR for 8 years. I had to find another doctor and starting next week I will be taking 30 mg Oxymorphone ER every 12 hours and 10 mg Oxycodone IR up to 3 per day. I have been out of my break thru pain med for 2 days now and my pain level averages 9 to 10 every day so I have taken 5 mg valium, Tylenol #3 with codine and a baclofen to stop me from going into withdrawal. What else can I do until my insurance co. gives their OK,

Thanks so much David for your very intelligent reply. No, I have never heard of Kratom but I am certainly going to find out now. Drs. have cut me down to 30 mg of Opana ER, and changed my breakthrough pain to 10 mg Oxycodone IR. It is not as effective as Morphine but being on pain killers for 18 years now, I have come to tolerate them all. One doctor wanted to take me back to Opana 10 IR and I refused. On a scale of 1 to 10, my pain level is about the same every day...8/9 from my waist down, and I spend every day in bed. What the government is doing is absolutely criminal. We are the ones who are lawful, yet we are the ones treated like we are the abusers of narcotics. 120mg of an equivalent to Morphine per day is the maximum they are telling doctors to dispense. I found out the formula they use and I wonder who in the world came up with Opana is 3 times as strong as Morphine whereas Morphine Sulfate is one (1), because it is morphine. So, who is responsible for arriving at the answers of the strengths of your pills compared to morphine. The DEA? The doctors are afraid they will lose their livelihood or face fines if they don't cut down their patients narcotics. It is sad, for them, but especially for us, the ones in pain, that do need something to help us to continue leading productive lives. I wish I could say the latter was me. I only last 10 minutes on my feet.
Re: "Is morphine stronger than oxycodone" - I feel that answers to this question may be highly opinionated according to each individual as well as several underlying factors, including but not limited to: the binders/fillers in each respective tablet that may affect bioavailability; generic vs brand names; method of administration; (e.g. liquid/IV morphine vs tablet/oral morphine); etc...
That said, the only way to know for certain is to try each medication for yourself and make assessments based on your level of pain relief. In such cases, it might also be worth noting that one's level of pain may vary day to day, so comparing one med's potency to the other on a day with more or less pain could turn out to be misleading. For this reason it's probably best to stay on each prospective treatment option for a set period of time in order to make these determinations.
Have you considered trying kratom for the opioid withdrawals? NIH has a clinical study depicting kratom's promising effect on mitigating opioid withdrawals. [Source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3670991]. It has also been touted by many here on MedsChat as an effective pain reliever.
I hope this helps!
Kit kat,
There's really nothing more you can take since your already supplementing codeine, diazepam and baclofen for your breakthrough medthe synergistic effects taken concurrently should provide enough relief to make it through the worst of your temporary withdrawal. Kratom is something some swear by but that to has a very high potential for abuse and is unregulated. Hope you find relief soon
If I were you I'd stop playing doctor. You are never supposed to take Valium with morphine or hydromorphone. It tanks your blood pressure. I had neck spine surgery. I was on hydromorphone and morphine sulfate Sr and my blood pressure dropped to 99/34. The doctor flipped out on the Rn. You put those in the online pill computer and skull and cross bones comes up. This is fatal.
Re: David (# 1)
Well morphine is a basic synthetic opiate and is the strongest pain med other than the stupid killer fentanyl, but stay away from fentanyl and seriously try a back massage with your morphine. You don't want to climb that ladder too quickly because you will suffer. A fifteen to eighteen mg is probably the best way to go or the two and two hundred time release.
Re: David (# 1)
Take benedryl and ask the doctor for clonodine. Benedryl helps with the anti hystamine needed because when u stop taking opiates our bodies create excess hystamine for whatever reason.
In the future, ration your medicine. Oxymorphone has an oral bioavailability of only 10 percent. So your 30 mgs are only yielding 3 mgs in your body when ingested.
