Interaction Of Percocet And Tramadol
(Newest replies first)
Updated
Multiple knee surgeries; bone spur on L heel secondary to limping on right leg for years; spondylolysthesis in back. Prescribed 1-2 Percocet(s) per night (5-325) to help sleep and Tramadol (50mgs, up to 4Xday). If my first 2 Trams haven't touched my pain (fell 2 days ago), would taking the remaining 2, plus the Percocets, have any kind of additive analgesic effect? Or would the stronger Perc render the Tram unnoticeable? Should mention I'm a pill horse: since childhood, I've had to take higher doses to get effects, w/ any drugs. I'm 5'11" and 185.

I just took a (512) Percocet at 10:30pm Wednesday night; no meds today Thursday. So is it safe to take a Tramadol (Tv 58) now?
Truly everyone is different, and there are genetic diagnostics that can be performed to see if you are a poor metabolizer of certain medications.
Via NIH.gov:
"Phase 1 Metabolism
The CYP3A4 enzyme is the primary metabolizer of fentanyl10 and oxycodone,11 although normally a small portion of oxycodone undergoes CYP2D6 metabolism to oxymorphone (Table 110-18). Tramadol undergoes both CYP3A4- and CYP2D6-mediated metabolism.16 Methadone is primarily metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2B6; CYP2C8, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP2C9 also contribute in varying degrees to its metabolism.19-23 The complex interplay of methadone with the CYP system, involving as many as 6 different enzymes, is accompanied by considerable interaction potential."

Hi, Verwon! Than you for taking the time to consider my question. I'm not taking more than the prescribed dose of Percocet, but I am taking all of my day's allotment of Tramadol (total = 200 mgs) at once. Frankly, fewer than 3 at a time doesn't even touch it. I've taken in total, then, 200 mgs. of Tramadol and 2 of 5-325 Percocet on various occasions. I haven't had any negative reactions, aside from slight constipation. (Like a said: pill horse.) I'm just wondering if I'm wasting the Tramadol by taking it WITH the Percocet. By the evening, I'm such a hurtin' pup that 2 Percs don't do that much, but if the Tramadol would be better served taken at an earlier point, as a kind of booster or precursor (or later, for that matter) then I want to do so as efficiently as possible. Thank you again for your time!
Hello, Tristan! How are you?
No, you shouldn't take more than prescribed, per dose, or you may overdose. Both of these medications are considered opiate analgesics, so taking more at once could place you at risk.
They may also be habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation and dry mouth.
Have you discussed the issue with your physician? They may need to prescribe something else for you.
